Does the issue still occur if you start Firefox in Safe Mode? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
How about with a new, empty profile? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile

No, it doesn't.

Haven't tried that yet.

It seems like a problem with one or more of my add-ons, because after disabling all of them Firefox now runs normally.

OK, I think I found the problem...I re-enabled my add-ons one-by-one, restarting and trying to reproduce the problem each time. When I enabled SiteAdvisor, the problem appeared again.

McAfee are working on an updated version of their Site Advisor extension, to prevent the issues it causes with Firefox.
To help work out what versions of the extension don't work (for the purposes of blocklisting it in bug 637542), it would be useful to know what version you are using.
Please can you go to the page "about:support" (type it without quotes in the address bar) and paste the contents of the extension section as a reply here.
Thanks!

Reopening since now in the McAfee section, so something for them to sort out.

Is this still an issue with that latest version of Firefox and McAfee SiteAdvisor?

Went through the following issue using the following builds/versions:
- latest Nightly build available here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2013-03-07-03-09-26-mozilla-central/
- McAfee SiteAdvisor 3.6.0.187
- Windows XP Pro SP3 x86
Visited Gmail (logging in) using several different ways without any crashes, hangs or performance issues:
- Logged into Gmail by going through direct URL
- Logged into Gmail by going through Goolge search engine
- Logged into Gmail by going though the search engine box (CTRL + K)
- Logged into Gmail by going through the McAfee SiteAdvisor search
Montana, can you reproduce the original issue using the latest version of the Nightly build?
