Thunderbird 3.0.11 is no-longer supported.
Please update to the latest 3.1.x version (currently 3.1.9) and see if you can reproduce the issue there.

They can be attached to this bug, but please try updating first.

Upon selecting Update, 3.1.8 is offered with a warning that ESET Smart Security extension will not work. When will the ESET extension be supported?

The ESET extension is a third-party extension, so you will need to check with ESET to see if there is an update to their software - from a quick search on the internet, it appears that there is an ESET update that will support Thunderbird 3.1, so you may want to try getting that first.
