Nominating because it is something not addressed by a bug fix that had blocked final, see bug 633941. The bug fix doesn't work on 10.5.

I've seen this and even with Firefox Version 5 on Mac OSX 10.5.x. We're having the same issue with Songbird. We thought it might have been a XULRunner 1.9.2 issue, but Firefox 3.6 seems to work properly. I compared the Info.plist and didn't see anything obvious.
Depending on the install steps it seems to work occasionally. But as soon as I reboot it stops working.
The other thing that I noticed is that when I reboot, the html documents have a Firefox logo, but Finder churns a bit and they turn into some generic HTML icon. Not sure if that's really important or not.

I've covered this ground before. I can deal with it.

I've confirmed that this bug only happens on OS X 10.5.8 -- not on 10.7.X or 10.6.8.
This bug is also reproducible on OS X 10.5.x on a PPC G4. Some, or maybe many, of us cannot afford to upgrade platform/architecture to intel. I guess we are left in the dust?
4 months, 4MONTHS! since anyone addressed this bug. Someone with some clout, please, cough up the strained, restricted, "It ain't gonna get fixed. Mozilla believes everyone should upgrade their architecture, whether they can or not. We will no longer address any issues other than INTEL. Get over it (pppffffffftttttt)." non-responsive statement, officially.

Can we close this if it is 10.5 only?

I think so.
Closing WONTFIX, since we've now dropped support for OS X 10.5 on the trunk. (See bug 772682.)
