noticed this whilst fixing bug 63913, thought I'd fixed it at some point, but
aparently not. oh well. I'll fiddle with it somemore while I'm at it.
Confirmed

Platform: PC
OS: Win 98
Build: 2001010204

Marking NEW.
Severity: major → trivial

Summary: page info gets wider than it's window when the url gets to long → URL does not fit in Page Info Dialog box
This will probably be fixed by making the url a read-only textbox in bug 55713.
Sounds good to me. I'll go ahead and make it depend on bug 55713.
Depends on: 55713

yea, it'll be fixed along with bug 52730

can we move this off to 0.9.2? trying to get down to just the critical
bugs needed for that milestone...
this one won't be checked in in time either
Target Milestone: mozilla0.9.1 → mozilla0.9.2
*** Bug 84321 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
no time before .9.2
Target Milestone: mozilla0.9.2 → mozilla0.9.3
52730 is targetted to 0.9.3 and this will be fixed by it. Is it really
necessary that this remain targetted to .9.3 as well (especially given the
seeming likelihood that 52730 isn't getting checked in before tonight's freeze)?
Target Milestone: mozilla0.9.3 → mozilla0.9.4
It's the easiest of the group to fix, btw. (crop="right") We can check in bug
52730 now, if we don't mind that it will almost regress bug 88153. I say
'almost' regress because there's another bug that keeps the exploit from
working, if it were ever fixed (some uncertainty there, I believe), bug 88153
would suddenly start working again. As bad as that sounds, it would actually
make it easier to fix other bugs in this area; the patch for bug 52730 is
already rather unwieldy.

I guess this should have actually gone in bug 52730 itself, but oh well.
oh, and on a possibly related note, fixing bug 52730 means I have to make a new
patch for bug 83017 and visa versa. fixign 52730 first is the easier of the two.
urls should use crop="center".
Except that when you combine this bug with bug 55713, crop="middle" doesn't work
very well any more, even now that it's correctly implemented. Fixing bug 55713
required showing the url and other data in a textbox that was made clear and
read only, so that you can select the text and copy it. Personally, I can't
imagine what the mouse select and scroll code would do to a textbox with
crop="middle" on it.
this one seems to be sliding.. lets try to give it a realistic milestone.

Target Milestone: mozilla0.9.4 → ---
I still think that fixing bug 55713 (making the URL a read-only textbox) is the
best way to fix this bug.

Also, the images list dosen't allow selection of the url, open in new window,
save as, etc.

Is this related or another issue?
Apart from messing up the "security" tab this also makes the scrollbars in
"forms" and "images" tabs disappear, which pretty much prevents me from
scrolling in those lists because moving down the selection with the keyboard is
very slow (in "images" at least).

BTW: While resizing the "page info" window gradually until it is too small for
the longest text item to fit in I noticed the following: it first shortens the
rightmost word that hits the right border by changing it to the first few letter
and then putting three dots, like "Dialog" would become "Di...". But once the
rightmost word is reduced to "..." it doesn't continue doing this with the next
word. I suspect this is a bug somewhere in the text display widget used for
those fields. I have no idea what widget that would be, so maybe someone more
familiar with those widgets could check if there's already a bug report for that?
