Build Identifier: Firefox version 4.0 I believe
Firefox prompted me to upgrade to version 4. I ran the upgrade and chose to overwrite the old version only to find out the new version would not run on my OS. Needless to say I'm not a happy camper. I now need to reinstall an older version.
When you check for updates you should also check for the users OS and make sure the new version will run. If it won't, then don't try to install the new version.
Reproducible: Didn't try
Steps to Reproduce:
1. I may be stupid, but I'm not stupid enough to try it again!
2.
3.
Actual Results:
Firefox won't run on my Mac OS 10.4.11
Expected Results:
Automatic upgrade would run without any problems
I'm really irritated!!!! I thought I was getting a painless upgrade and now I have to reinstall an older version. Work I really didn't want to do or have time to do.

For a short time updates to Firefox 4 were unfortunately offered to people with PowerPC processors even though it no longer supports PPC, if they manually chose to check for updates.
However, this was supposed to be fixed ~2.5 days ago in bug 643860.
How long ago did you get the update, was it since then?
In the meantime, you can get the previous version from here:

We've had two different types of problems reported so far, I'm curious if either of these is what happened with you:
1) user is running FF3.5.x/FF3.6.x, and does Help->CheckForUpdates. An update is found, and the user is (incorrectly) upgraded to FF4.0.0, even though PPC is not supported.
...or
2) user upgrades to latest FF3.5.18/3.6.16, and sees a button on the FF3.5.18/3.6.16 start page asking them to download and install Firefox4.0. The download is successful, but the FF4.0 install does not work, because PPC is not supported.
...or
3) something else?

Sorry. This is obviously not what we'd hoped would happen.

Details in bug#643860. From comment#0 it *sounds* like this is what happened. We believe this to be fixed, but it would be great to get confirmation.

Please reopen if you are still seeing problems.
