This is mainly so shortcuts are named the same when channel switching and to install into the same install dir.

note: about a month ago I discussed this with beltzner and jay... both of them agreed based on the alternatives.

"besides mozilla-central"? Why not include m-c also?

Nightly users sometimes have a release install for stability.

I talked with Rob Strong and Mayumi. We already cleared this plan with Jay so I don't believe there is any product decision blocking us. It's now just a matter of resources and getting the work done.

I'm still confused about the motivation for this. This only impacts people manually installing nightly/aurora builds (small minority), right? And the effect is that if they switch to beta/release, their shortcuts/install location no longer match the branding of the build they're using? Are there other effects? (default browser handling like Mac?)

The main concern that has been expressed by Jay and others is people being confused when changing channels and the name for the bundle and in the dock not changing especially for the larger number people that install a beta version and then change the channel to release. The default browser handling on Mac is also a concern as expressed in the Mac version of this bug. I've discussed the options available with a few drivers and we will likely come to a decision after johnath and I discuss this. btw: we are leaning toward not doing much of anything at this time but we do want to tune it a bit better than the current behavior.

(In reply to comment #7) > changing especially for the larger number people that install a beta version > and then change the channel to release. But there's no branding difference between beta/release, right? So it only impacts people manually installing aurora or nightly?

That is correct and has been the main reason why I have been promoting in the discussions that this problem is not that big of a problem especially after the release build has channel switching capability.

I checked with the product team. Please have the app names be as follows... Firefox Nightly Firefox Aurora Firefox Firefox PLEASE drop the "Mozilla" for the beta and release versions.

It has been decided that channel switching will be removed in bug 659972 so resolving wontfix. Naming issues that don't have to do with channel switching will be handled in bug 659321.

Sounds like there is nothing more to do here so I am going to "untrack" this.
