From bug 11049: > Question: Does this "movemail" implement "movemail IMAP-style" (= movemail) > eaves mail in /var/mail/$USER, adds references to it's database and marks > mail in /var/mail/$USER as "read" (is that possible ?)) ? This would allow > users to use the mailer of their choice (like pine, /usr/ucb/from, dtmail > etc.) to read/send messages... Since it is usually eval to leave mail in /var/(spool/)mail/$USER this should be a movemail option (?).

Yes, this would be very handy on linux/unix systems that have their own or mounted mail spooler! On my linux system the mail spool lives in $MAIL, which equals /var/spool/mail/$USER. A number of unix/linux users use fetchmail or something similar to pop the mail from accounts. I don't want mozilla to put it in its Inbox, that makes it harder to read it with other mail clients like mutt, pine, etc. Especially when the mozilla mail saves Inbox on a local disk and you log in to different systems regularly with NFS mounted $MAIL.

Isn't this exactly against the logic of http://www.jwz.org/doc/movemail.html? Shouldn't this bug be WONTFIX?

Might be. Actually, I don't know whether it should be a move-mail option or not, but I would like to be able to read the same emails with mutt and with thunderbird. As mutt operates on $MAIL, why shouldn't Thunderbird operate on $MAIL as well.

I'm not sure if the Netscape movemail should still be the definition of what's used in mailnews. And even if there are valid reasons for mailnews not to operate on $MAIL there should be an option to keep the $MAIL contents w/o removing them after movemailing.
