WFM with Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; rv:5.0a2) Gecko/20110515 Thunderbird/3.3a4pre.
Does it works better if you start Thunderbird in -safe-mode (see http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe-Mode) ?

Exactly the same behavior.
What happens when you try? Any error message? Does Thunderbird "hang" for a while or just not doing anything whatsoever?

There is the file with message. Just try open.
I couldn't reproduce on Linux either, but on Windows 7, I see the behavior stated in comment #5. The key seems to be the ".mht" suffix of the attachment, which for some reason causes an issue. Thus confirmed, but marking duplicate as it has been reported before related to this specific attachment type.
