Hi Matej,
Just a quick recap from our meeting today.
*so far we've only had snippets to promote Aurora releases and Channel Switcher
* would like to take this a notch up and have a series of snippets lined up to continue to promote the Aurora channel in addition to snippets just focused on new version release announcements
* some ideas include:
* snippets that are more user centered/more about the user (ie. if you are a web developer, if you are a designer, if you are a student...)
* snippets that are more about user's behavior (ie. if you develop apps, if you develop demos, if you like to *action* on the web...)
* snippets that are more feature focus (user facing feature tbd, web developer features?)
* snippets focus on the rapid release process (ie. Build that has new features every 6 weeks)
* snippets focus on the broader innovations/running the future of firefox (ie. start using a version that is not available for another 3 months!, you are running a version that is the future of firefox)
* facts/trivia (ie. did you know that firefox has 3 different channels. download the right build for you)
* snippets with educational spin
* snippets to continue to encourage to test and do feedback
* it would be great if we can have 5 lined up for next week (June 8), 5 the week after (week of june 13), 5 the week after that (week of june 21st) and so on... kinda like a rolling thunder snippet series

Jumping in here with two quick thoughts:
- it'd be great to get more specifics around what snippets you want. Just from reading comment #0 I don't think Matej has enough to work with.
- we should also consider his workload here...this is a pretty big snippet request. Will let Tara weigh in with more if needed, since she's more familiar with the details of the project list than I am, but this feels ambitious.

re: timeline
would be more than happy to work with tara and matej regarding a more realistic timeline. this is more of an ongoing request and longer term plan vs it needs to happen right now.
matej, let me know if you have any additional questions from my notes and our meeting today. in the meantime, i will compile a list of features/tangible things and who it applies to, specific target segments (web developers, designers etc) and hope that will help to get us started. the snippet categories are also just ideas and we can continue to brainstorm on specific.
thanks!

Posting this here so I have it all in once place. Sorry for the spam, everyone.
Here are the list of features in the current Aurora (6): https://wiki.mozilla.org/Features/Release_Tracking#Desktop_2
http://blog.mozilla.com/futurereleases/2011/05/27/firefoxaurora/
If you click the link to the features, most of them have a quick summary and some might have use cases as well.
Unfortunately, there's not as many user facing features. There are 2 semi user facing features:
Site-based data management UI
(Other blogs on Site-Based Data Management UI: http://blog.sidstamm.com/2011/05/managing-your-relationship-with-sites.html)
Add-ons Manager with Plugin Check.
We can start with the following categories:
general snippet promoting Aurora
features specific snippet
snippet focused on the rapid release process (ie. Did you know that Firefox Aurora has latest cutting edge technology every six weeks? etc)
snippets focus on the broader innovations/running the future of firefox (ie. start using a version that is not available for another 3 months!, you are running a version that is the future of firefox)

Here's a first bunch of these. A few of them double up, as I wasn't sure of the best approach, but there should be enough for a start. Let me know when you'd like the next batch and what I should focus on.
Aurora, Beta or Final Release: Choose the channel that’s right for you and get a new version every six weeks.
We’re spreading the Firefox awesomeness across three different channels. Choose from Aurora, Beta or Final Release.
Help us make the next version of Firefox the best version of Firefox yet. Download Aurora or Beta and give us your feedback.
Download Aurora and start using a version of Firefox that won’t be released for another three months.
Get on the Aurora channel and start using a future version of Firefox today.
See into the future of Firefox. Download Aurora and get on a version that won’t be released for another three months.
Get the latest cutting edge technology on Firefox Aurora. Then get it again every six weeks.
Manage your relationships with all the sites you visit from one place. Grab an Aurora build and type about:permissions into the Awesome Bar.
Get the latest experimental features with Firefox Aurora. Type about:permissions into the Awesome Bar to try out our data management window.
Calling all Web developers. Check out the new Web developer menu in Firefox Aurora for the latest features, like Scratchpad and Web Console.

Thanks Matej. My quick 2 cents:
* Most of these feel a little long to me. Would love to hear Laura's thoughts here as well.. but in terms of word count, I feel like some of our snippets are getting rather lengthy, and they start to break into 3 or more lines on standard screens. I personally dislike the formatting when that happens, and feel like we should be able to get our message across in less words. Doing a rough character count (spaces included) I feel like something around 96-100 is safe and generally fits on 2 lines. Some of these are up to 140 characters.
* That aside, here's my feedback:
> Aurora, Beta or Final Release: Choose the channel that’s right for you and
> get a new version every six weeks.
Aren't we trying to focus on promoting Aurora here?
> We’re spreading the Firefox awesomeness across three different channels.
> Choose from Aurora, Beta or Final Release.
Same comment as above. I also feel like "spreading the awesomeness" might imply that there's less awesome in each.
> Help us make the next version of Firefox the best version of Firefox yet.
> Download Aurora or Beta and give us your feedback.
I like it. Can probably cut out the second "Firefox" and just say "best version yet". If we want to focus it on Aurora, we can cut out Beta too and make it shorter.
> Download Aurora and start using a version of Firefox that won’t be released
> for another three months.
Not a fan of this one.
> Get on the Aurora channel and start using a future version of Firefox today.
My favorite of the batch. Short, and sweet.
> See into the future of Firefox. Download Aurora and get on a version that
> won’t be released for another three months.
I like the reference to seeing the "future of Firefox", but don't like the reference to having to wait 3 months.
> Get the latest cutting edge technology on Firefox Aurora. Then get it again
> every six weeks.
Like it!
> Manage your relationships with all the sites you visit from one place. Grab
> an Aurora build and type about:permissions into the Awesome Bar.

Can't this be a snippet as well?: "Get the latest experimental features with Firefox Aurora" ?
> Calling all Web developers. Check out the new Web developer menu in Firefox
> Aurora for the latest features, like Scratchpad and Web Console.
These all feel a bit long to me. But I definitely like the last one and how it calls out "web developers". Good way to grab the attention of our intended audience.

Also, in terms of quantity... Grace, perhaps you can narrow your request down to a few snippets that you can use in the near term, and then we can have Matej work on additional ones later. Rather not have a long list of snippets that may not even be used until we put some out there and see how they perform. Do you agree? What would be a reasonable number of snippets here?

Thanks so much for that! I've never had a character count for snippets before. That helps tremendously.

There are a few different bugs open for this, but I thought it would be easier to post options in one place. In my initial brainstorm with Grace on these, we talked about doing some snippets that speak to the overall rapid release process and how different channels fit in to that. If we don't want any like that, please let me know.

Fair point. How about this:
More release channels mean more Firefox awesomeness. Choose from Aurora, Beta or Final Release.

I'd prefer to keep both mentions of Firefox for the way the line flows. But happy to lose Beta (or Aurora) and focus it on just one channel.

Totally works. Grace had asked for some that were focused on specific features, so that's what I was going for in those.

Could be shortened to:
Calling all Web developers. Check out the new Web developer menu in Firefox Aurora.

- from my understanding from Laura Forrest, we dont have any specific number word count for snippets. I agree with keeping them shorter when we can but also willing to try out messages can be a bit longer but more relevant, or more conversational or tips like feature related once and see how they go.

overall - agree with keeping it shorter when we can but would also like to try out different ways to communicate to our users in addition to tagline promotions but more conversations, tips and tricks or features specific snippets

Grace, could you perhaps paste the batch that you're going with? Are you going to use all the ones Matej suggested or a subset / with tweaks? Before I close, I'd like to make sure we have a sense of where we netted out, for future reference. Thanks.
Also, we don't have a character limit with the Snippets since they're not hosted by Google Gods anymore. But I think keeping formatting in mind is still pretty important. I'm sure we can fill the page with text if we wanted to, but we dont' want to... so, eventually I think we should come up with a character limit, or recommended range so that it's displayed nicely, in addition to communicating your key points in short and slightly longer formats.

I don't think these are right yet and wouldn't want them to go live without further refinement.
Basically I think there's way too much talk about channels, which won't mean much to users. Channels is a nice internal term but I'd like to avoid using it as a public-facing word. I really don't think that people will know what it means.
We should approach these as separate products. You're not in a channel, you're using Firefox Aurora, which is a separate product from Firefox Beta. We should be promoting those as related, but mainly as separate products with their own distinct benefits.
I can break down each blurb with more detailed feedback if you need me to, but that's my main point. I also agree with Tara that I'd like to know which ones you want to go with first so we can focus on those. As it is, it's a lot of text to review/edit (not to mention to write!).

Sounds like this needs a bit more discussion. I'm finding it difficult to talk about the rapid release process because, as you rightly point out, channels is pretty inside, but saying something like versions is equally confusing as it makes it sound like we're ditching numbers in favor of names or something.
Grace, if you can narrow down the list to the three or five you'd like to use, message wise, I can try to make them fit John's comments better.
I did just think of another one, though:
Download Aurora and get the latest, experimental, cutting-edge, not-quite-ready-for-prime-time version of Firefox.
That still says version, so it might need a tweak, but it's more focused on just Aurora.
Comment 16•14 years ago
|
||
Thanks Matej. Let's talk further once Grace shares her short list.
Comment 17•14 years ago
|
||
In general I'm confused on the audience of each snippet. Is the purpose here to move people from Fx4/5 --> Beta? Or Fx4/5 --> Aurora? Or Beta users --> Aurora? Fx4/5 users are pretty mainstream. Beta users are not. That should be reflected in the language we use to talk to them. We can, and should, target each group individually through the snippet tool.
Grace - forgive me if you've already mentioned this in the bug, but can you provide more details on the desired user segmentation?

there's 3 parts here.
1. Promote Aurora by features new technology and features in the version (this would be targeted to fx4 b1-b12, we can also use to promote features to test to aurora users and reuse the feature specific snippets when beta comes out)
2. Promote Aurora (general promotions) - targeted to fx4 b1-b12
3. Increase Awareness about channels. that there are other version of 'Firefox' available to choose from (fx4 b1-b12, fx4 but not in the immediately couple of weeks)
my top picks:
1. Promote Aurora by features new technology and features in the version
Calling all Web developers. Check out the new Web developer menu in Firefox Aurora for the latest features, like Scratchpad and Web Console.
2. Promote Aurora (general promotions)
Get on the Aurora channel and start using a future version of Firefox today.
Help us make the next version of Firefox the best version of Firefox yet. Download Aurora or Beta and give us your feedback.
Get the latest cutting edge technology on Firefox Aurora. Then get it again every six weeks.(Get the latest cutting edge technology every six weeks)
3. Increase Awareness about channels.
Aurora, Beta or Final Release: Choose the channel that’s right for you and get a new version every six weeks.

Matej and I have a standing disagreement about exclamation points, but I think one strategically used here would be nice. More like "Calling all Web developers! Blah blah..."
More than that, though, does this really make Aurora sound that exciting for devs? I'd like to see this be more benefits-focused (talking about what the developer menu means - makes your life easier, etc) rather than just the fact that we have a new menu (which, to me at least, sounds pretty underwhelming).

The last one of these works best for me. But I think we can make it even simpler and more direct. Something more like "Want the most awesome cutting edge features? Get Firefox Aurora!" - that could be improved upon, but that's the basic value prop.
> 3. Increase Awareness about channels.
> Aurora, Beta or Final Release: Choose the channel that’s right for you and

I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the point of this one. I really don't think we should be advertising the concept of channels for the reason noted above...do we just want people to know that there are different versions of Firefox for different types of users? If so, maybe we say that more directly.

I was trying to combine too many things in to one there and ended up burying the good parts. These is better, I think:
Calling all Web developers! Check out the latest features in Firefox Aurora like Scratchpad and Web Console.
Calling all Web developers! Firefox Aurora makes building and testing JavaScript snippets easy with Scratchpad.
Calling all Web developers! Use Scratchpad to easily build and test JavaScript snippets right from Firefox Aurora.

Browse the Web on the cutting edge with Firefox Aurora.
For the latest cutting edge features you need the latest cutting edge version of Firefox Aurora.
Download Firefox Aurora and get the latest cutting edge features not quite ready for prime time.

Aurora, Beta or Final Release: Choose the Firefox that's right for the way you use the Web.
There's a Firefox for every kind of user out there. Find out which one is right for you.
For every user there is a Firefox. Get the one that's right for you.

I think these are going in the right direction - only concern is that it seems a bit like we're promoting Scratchpad more (or at least equal to) Aurora.

Maybe something like: "For the latest cutting edge features you need the latest cutting edge browser. Try Firefox Aurora."

Would like to avoid using the term "Final Release" as a parallel to Aurora or Beta. Should be just "Firefox".
> There's a Firefox for every kind of user out there. Find out which one is

This could be good, but needs a little more detail. Maybe something like "Whether you like cutting edge new features or well-tested stability, there's a version of Firefox for..." (not that exactly, but something along those lines).

As I understood it, Scratchpad is a new feature that's only available in Aurora right now. Wouldn't it be OK to give it equal weight since that's what developers will find enticing?

Whether you're into taking risks or playing it safe, there's a Firefox that's right for you.
From cutting edge features to proven stability, there's a Firefox that's right for you.
Whether you're Mrs. Cutting Edge or Mr. Stability, there's a Firefox with your name on it.

Hey PMMs, can one of you field this one?

Sounds good to me, then. Again - PMMs, any comments?

Is it "there's a version of Firefox"? Will people get the nuance here? This is new ground for us...

This is tricky. I feel like people will interpret version to mean a new release, like 4, 5, whatever. That said, I'm fine with "From cutting edge features to proven stability, there's a version of Firefox that's right for you." I just don't want it to be misleading or confusing.
Would be good to get some other POVs on this.

Scratchpad is new in Aurora 6. But we can use for beta once Aurora 7 releases in a few weeks. but basically wanted to highlight features new in the version.

- i feel like this statement equates Aurora to Final release Firefox. that it's a completely different browser rather than an Aurora as part of the process to getting to Firefox.
- we can also play with "experimental" cutting edge features in describing Firefox Aurora
