follow-up bug #588007 Could be a good choiche now, to have also messages list pane icons in monochrome (paperclip and junk icon for example): do you agree?
For what it's worth, I don't agree. The thread list (not header) icons are the sort of thing that's meant to jump out at you, since the data is pretty dense there. In the other places where monochrome icons are being used, there are only a handful of icons (at most 6 in the message header), whereas every row has icons in the thread list.
I think I agree with Jim on this one. This is a place were we can use color efficiently.
Yes, regardless of my overall opinion on the discolorization of icons, the icon color here clearly has a signal function to highlight the status of a specific message. Thus, removing the color here would regress that function.

I think it's a good idea to make them monochrome, but not monochrome as in black and white, but a single color (no gradients). Making some of them a bit simpler (and a bit smaller, ie the junk icon) wouldn't hurt either.
Per the discussion above, I think this is WONTFIX. Comment 5 is workable, but I don't think it's what this bug is about. It might be worth discussing single-color (non-grayscale) icons if we update our theme again (maybe to match Firefox's Photon UI?).
