This is working as intended. If you don't want to do this, you can either disable the feature entirely under Options -> Advanced -> Reading & Display and uncheck "Show only display name for people in my address book", or you can selectively disable it per-contact by opening the Edit Contact dialog and unchecking "Always prefer display name over message header".

The feature is not working as intended. I'm talking about Usenet messages, not e-mail messages. The upper pane showing all the Usenet messages is replacing the poster name in the "From" column with a display name from my address book. The posted message was not from anyone in my address book; it was from some random person unconnected to me who is not in my address book. The name in the "From" column should be, e.g., "Joe Usenet Troll", and instead it is showing the display name of a person in my address book.
This began happening when I upgraded to Thunderbird 5.0; it never did this when I was at 3.x.

If you look at the source of these messages, do the senders have non-ASCII characters in their names? If that's the case, this is a duplicate of bug 669925.
