I see the behaviour in the attached screenshot when I drag a tab thumbnail back on to the tab strip after dragging it off far enough to turn into a thumbnail.
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:8.0a1) Gecko/20110728 Firefox/8.0a1 I can confirm this on ubuntu too, you have to hunt a bit to find the threshold where the tab will end up below instead of beside but its not that hard.
