User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:8.0a2) Gecko/20110819 Firefox/8.0a2 Iceweasel/8.0a2 Build ID: 20110819042004 Steps to reproduce: Gentlemen, the spell checking puts red underlines under what I write into this box, but not anymore on Facebook comments. Actual results: My Facebook comments to posts are not getting checked anymore, causing me embarrassment! Expected results: Yes I know about http://kb.mozillazine.org/Layout.spellcheckDefault
Yes I restarted in safe mode, with all junk disabled. Same problem. layout.spellcheckDefault;2 what more could you ask for? I'm talking about all those text boxes waiting for one to post a "status update" or comment on others', all over Facebook. Imaging me, misspelling something in public!
Hi, first, can you enable it back with right click ? second, can you post a copy of this facebook page (file -> save page as); ideally, a zipped full page, but simple html page should be ok can you also tell list of dictionaries installed (just en-US or some other languages) ?

What a surprise. Firefox has grown a sub-menu choice, a English radio button, unclicked, has appeared. OK great, I have now clicked it, and Voila, I can spell again! But I would make it clicked beforehand, lest the next user be writing you again. I even reset my Facebook to English instead of Chinese, which didn't help, looking for a solution... when it turns out all along you FF fellows had secretly added an unclicked radio button within the checkmarked "check spelling" menu item. Sheesh.
The kicker is that radio button does NOT stay on always! On the same website one fills out a second form, only to notice one is getting away with misspelled words. Then only safe thing to do is to start each textbox with a "aaaaaaa" and see if it gets a red underline or not. If not, go into the menus and turn the English radio button back on. Drives one nuts, and didn't use to be that way before you added the submenu Languages.
Summary: spellchecker busted in Facebook → spellchecker won't stay on!
Now I downloaded an extra dictionary... and get two identical radio buttons in the menu... maybe one is truncated.
jidanni: it would be really helpful for us to diagnose this problem if you provide the information requested in comment 2. Thanks! :-)
Yes I can always turn it on by clicking one of the radio buttons, but I wish it would stay on. Which it sometimes does and sometimes doesn't... works good today... anyways how can I tell you the dictionaries when they are all labeled the same?
Can you please go to about:support, Copy All to Clipboard and paste them here? Thanks!
There is too much there. Anyway, the only words there with "spell" in them are United States English Spellchecker5.0.1trueen-US@dictionaries.addons.mozilla.org maybe that will be enough for you to debug why one sees two identical entries. As far as not staying turned on... lately it seems to stay turned on now in iceweasel: Installed: 8.0~a2+20110915042012-1

Is bug 707434 all the problem here?
I've started having this problem since Firefox 11 was released. Only on Facebook, the text boxes (for typing comments etc.) have spell check disabled by default. On other websites, there is no problem and spell check works as normal. Yes I can right-click and enable spell check, and yes I know about layout.spellcheckDefault (set to 2 but even the Search box in Facebook doesn't have spell check enabled). But this is a real bug in Firefox. It could be caused by the way Facebook pages function (using a lot of Ajax and what not). I would like to see this fixed and have spell check enabled by default wherever it is available. Having to right-click and select Check Spelling for every comment box on Facebook is *not* something I want to live with. I want it to happen automatically!
By the way, I'm using Windows 7 x64, not Linux. Just noticed this bug is tagged on Linux.
The Facebook issues were actually found to be a couple different Firefox bugs and were fixed in bug 734530 and bug 737889. The patch for bug 734530 has landed for Firefox 12, which is currently in beta and due for release in a few weeks. Bug 737889 is currently only fixed for Firefox 14. Not sure about the likelihood of it getting included in 12 or 13 given that it caused another bug (bug 741246) that hasn't yet been fixed (though there is a patch posted for review). Also, the Platform field means very little. It's just the OS the original bug filer was on when they filed it. It's rarely used for anything important. Finally, please don't spam multiple bugs with the same basic comments. It doesn't help anything. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html
Given comment 0, I'm going to go ahead and call this a dupe of bug 734530. As I said in comment 13, you can verify that Facebook comment boxes are now spellchecked in a Firefox 12 beta build. Facebook message spellchecking is fixed in a current Nightly build (what will become Firefox 14), but a decision has not yet been made about landing that fix for 12 or 13.

(In reply to Ryan VanderMeulen from comment #13) > Not sure about the likelihood of it getting included in 12 or 13 given > that it caused another bug (bug 741246) that hasn't yet been fixed > (though there is a patch posted for review). *sigh* And by bug 741246, I meant bug 741216 of course. Stupid typoes.
Thanks Ryan, and sorry for the spamming. I just wanted to bring both to attention. The problem has been annoying me for quite some time already. I'm glad it's getting fixed. Will wait for FF12.
