682624 - Thunderbird 6.0. folder column settings reset when folders are compacted

Steps to reproduce:

1)  Changed folder column settings for all folders using right-click menu on headings.
2)  Compacted folders manually
3)  Restarted Thunderbird


Actual results:

Folder settings had reset to default.
I did this manually because previously the settings had reset apparently at random. By a process of elimination, I tried changing anything that might affect preferences. The last thing I tried was to untick automatic compact setting in options and the columns stayed as i set them. So I reproduced this manually - with the same result. Every time I compact folders I have to readjust my columns which is a pain. There are bugs reporting "column settings not saved" that may be related to my report.


Expected results:

The columns should have stayed the way I had set them. As long as folders are not compacted manually or automatically - they do.

MY BUG WAS NEVER REPORTED ON IMAP FOLDERS. I DON'T HAVE ANY.
MY BUG WAS ON POP3 THEREFORE THIS IS NOT A DUPLICATE
ACTUALLY IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE.
IT IS THE TRANSIENT NATURE OF THE MSF FILES THAT CAUSES THE PROBLEM.
COLUMN PREFERENCES NEED TO BE SAVED IN PERMANENT FILES.

MSF FILES ARE DELETED/RECREATED BY COMPACTING FOLDERS. OTHER EVENTS CAUSE DELETION/RECREATION OF MSF FILES.

The underlying issue is view/backend related, not protocol. So the issue is common to both imap and pop.

Sorry for caps. Not intended as a "yell". Just a mistake on my part. The problem is caused by the transient nature of MSF files. Of course I know it is not protocol related so therefore the protocol should not be a part of either bug description. The message pane preferences need to be saved in a more permanent structure and the program defaults should be available for edit. This fault has been ever-present since v2 to my certain knowledge. The Mnenhy addon partly solves the problem but is not compatible with current versions.
