User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:6.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0
Build ID: 20110811165603

Steps to reproduce:

When replying to an email, the user should have two choices : either use the incoming email charset or use the default charset (unless (s)he selects manually some other charset before to send the reply). AFAIU, this is the purpose of the box labelled "use default encoding in replies when possible" in the Edit > Preferences > Display > Format > Advanced menu (rough translation from French)

On my configuration, this box is unchecked and default viewing and sending charsets are set as UTF-8.

Actual results:

Replies to iso8859-1 emails are encoded in UTF-8.

Expected results:

I expect new emails to be sent in UTF-8 (ok), UTF-8 emails to be replied in UTF-8 (ok), but iso8859-1 emails to be replied in iso8859-1 by default (bad).
