RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1047395

Details

(Keywords: uiwanted)

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:6.0.2) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0.2
Build ID: 20110902133214

Steps to reproduce:

1. In Firefox 6.x, do Help:About
2. Check for Updates
3. Try to find release notes for the update

Actual results:

The Firefox 6.x About box has no one-click link to the release notes for the update that it finds, so now you manually have to search for these on the Mozilla web site.

Expected results:

Firefox should have a link like "About this update" for one-click access to information about the update. The separate Help:Check for Updates command in old versions of Firefox had this feature (hence the "regression" in the summary above). Thunderbird 6.0.x also still has this feature working.
This bug is still in Firefox 7.0.1, and now also in Thunderbird 7.0 (feature worked in Thunderbird 6.0.x but quit working in Thunderbird 7.0).

Summary: Firefox 6.0.x About box now has no one-click way to see release notes of next patch (regression) → Offer release notes in About Firefox dialog
Version: 6 Branch → Trunk
How should this look like? A "Release Notes" link?

When should it be displayed? Surely if updates are set to manual, when the button offers "Update to 29.0" (after bug 600500 has landed).
I guess the link should still be displayed after you click the button, i.e. during download of the update, and when the button "Restart to Update" is displayed.
So the link could be displayed if updates are set to automatic as well.

The link could either be placed to the right (right-aligned) or below the button/progress indicator (left-aligned).

Actually would be good to offer to display release notes BEFORE you had to download and install the update. People who want to see release notes often want to see what they are updating for. Firefox before 6.x offered this. I think the link was actually named "About this update", but it has been a while, so the exact wording might be slightly different than what I am remembering.
This is probably related to bug 930591. We should get some UX love on this because just offering Release notes isn't necessarily the best option for most users (Only the most technically inclined care or understand everything in the release notes) and we should have a nicer way of presenting high level information for each release with the option to view the release notes for those who care to know
Bug 876037 removed the pref app.releaseNotesURL from each of the firefox-branding.js files. That needs to be reverted.
Bump! I am a technical user, and I like to see what HTML5, ES6, etc. updates come to Fx when I update, but it the release notes page is difficult to find from the website. I would love to have a convenient link to it from the about page.
