Steps to reproduce:
Installed Thunderbird 7 release and 8 beta (MAC), replacing Thunderbird 6 on two machines -- both are experiencing the same issue. When sorting (by date, name, subject, anything) sort now takes ages -- I get the spinning ball and the CPU usage spikes. Before it only took a second to sort thousands of emails -- now it takes many times longer.
Actual results:
Click on 'Name' -- spinning colored ball appears and the sorting takes huge amounts of time to complete. CPU usage spikes to max on one core on my laptop -- I believe my CPU usage on my iMac spikes all the cores but I can't confirm right now.
Expected results:
It should have sorted quickly, in a second or so.

sorting by sender is known to be slower in some situations, but not other sorts. If you turn off showing only display name (preferences, advanced, reading and display, uncheck "show only display name"), does it make a difference in sorting speed.
Wow! That "fixes" it -- absolutely back to normal (v. 6 and prior)... lightening-fast sorts...

Are you sure that sorting by non-sender fields was slow? In any case, this is caused by bug 672022
Yes -- sort by any field in any account (not just From).
I noticed it first on my iMac -- Thunderbird 7 beta first, then Thunderbird 8 beta . When I upgraded my MacBook Pro from 6 release to 7 release, the problem appeared here too on this machine. I didn't change anything in the prefs.
My address books are different too so it's not an issue with the size there -- i really don't sync my macbook address book because I don't need to -- this one is almost empty while I have hundreds of entries on the iMac.

On my TB8.2b unchecking the "Show only display name for people in my address book" option in the Tools > Options > Advanced > Reading & Display tab results in a messy and user-unfriendly display in the From: column.
