User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 Build ID: 20111008085652 Steps to reproduce: While running Litmus testcase ID# 14065 (Search Messages), I tried to consecutively re-sort the search results by different columns. Actual results: The column sorting indicator in one column didn't disappear, after another column to sort by was selected. It was possible to have column sorting indicators in all visible columns, even though the sort order was only determined by the last selected column. I observed the redundant sort indicators to disappear when moving the mouse back and hovering over a column header with an invalid sort indicator. Also, all but the active sort indicator disappeared when giving focus to another application window (I tried to take a screen-shot to clarify this issue, but couldn't capture the faulty behaviour, as all invalid sort indicators disappeared when launching the screen-shot application.). Also, the subject column (first column) doesn't seem to be affected by this problem, as it clears all invalid sort indicators when selected as the column to sort by (as would be expected in all other cases as well). Expected results: I would expect only one sort indicator to be shown at a given time, corresponding to the column that is actually used to sort the search results.

This problem is also present in the 'Advanced Address Book Search'. Interestingly, the first column (default: Name) is affected as well, unlike 'Subject' in 'Search Messages'.

As an additional piece of information, I have just realized that the described problem can be observed in the main message list window as well - consecutively sorting messages by subject, sender, date, etc. [Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:11.0) Gecko/20120310 Thunderbird/11.0] So this seems to be more of an underlying Linux issue...

magnus, have you seen, or understand this?

Yeah i see this (tried the search dialog). Mousing over it the other column makes it go away. I believe it's called a "region invalidation" problem.
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
The same problem can be seen in Firefox (on Linux), e.g. in Bookmarks->Show all bookmarks -> History (or Downloads) and then click some columns to sort them. It seems to be a toolkit problem.
Component: Search → XUL Widgets
Product: Thunderbird → Toolkit
Version: 10 → 10 Branch

I can reproduce this also : - using Thunderbird on the external display only - using Firefox Bookmark Manager on either display Hence it seems unrelated to bug 782907, AFAICT. thunderbird-16.0.1-2.fc16.x86_64 firefox-16.0.2-1.fc16.x86_64

Please reopen. The bug bites Firefox 60.0.1 (64-bit) on Kubuntu. Easily reproducible with the columns at about:config

> … on Linux Not limited to Linux. Also reproducible with KDE Plasma 5 on FreeBSD-CURRENT with: - Waterfox, where I first realised the bug - Firefox. ---- Likely explanations for people _not_ realising this bug 703849 include Mozilla bug: 1293983 - Sort direction arrow in tree column headers is upside-down https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1293983 – if people (like me) learn to completely ignore the arrow, they're likely to also _not_ notice when the arrow fails to change its upside-down direction. I guess that it's related to GTK+ ---- $ date ; uname -v Tue 29 May 2018 13:14:29 BST FreeBSD 12.0-CURRENT #2 r333587: Mon May 14 01:59:02 BST 2018 root@momh167-gjp4-hpelitebook8570p-freebsd:/usr/obj/usr/src/amd64.amd64/sys/GENERIC $ pkg info waterfox | grep Version Version : 56.2.0.13_5 $ pkg info firefox | grep Version Version : 60.0.1_3,1

This no longer seems to fail in Tb on linux in the threadpane/addressbook/search tree columns. Although it continues to fail on Fx 89 in the bookmarks/history dialog columns. Possibly due to setting css appearance: none
at some point a while ago.
