Details
Here is a user report I just confirmed:
In Thunderbirds message list the date column (at least) shows the wrong sort
direction. More exact:
It shows the sort direction of the *previous* shown mail folder.
It shows this wrong sort direction until i hover it with the mouse.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Show the message list of a mailbox "abc"
2. Sort the date column asscending bottom up
3. The sort indicator shows now the direction bottom up
4. Change to another mailbox "xyz"
5. Sort the date column ascending top down
6. The sort indicator shows now the direction top down
7. Go back to the mailbox "abc"
8. The sort indicator shows the wrong direction until
hovered by the mouse
6. The sort indicator shows now the direction top down
Actual Results:
The sort indicator of the date column shows the wrong direction (namely top
down) until hovered by the mouse
Expected Results:
The sort indicator of the date column should show the reverse direction

I'd say this is just another effect of bug 703849, but it has a bit different steps to reproduce. Let's not dupe it until it is investigated.
Can you see the problem on any other OS than Linux?
Depends on: 703849

I can reproduce this.
Important note : here, just attempting to make a screenshot (using KSnapshot here), does update the arrow to reflect its real state. Might not be thunderbird issue, then ?
Using
thunderbird-16.0.1-2.fc16.x86_64 on KDE 4.8.5
kde-baseapps-4.8.5-1.fc16.x86_64
kernel-3.6.6-1.fc16.x86_64, nouveau module
nVidia 8600M GT adapter

It's definitely a video issue : given two folders, one with date sort up, the other down, I can reproduce the issue on the external display, but not on the laptop LCD..

I can reproduce bug 703849 also :
- using Thunderbird on the external display only
- using Firefox Bookmark Manager on either display
Hence it seems unrelated, AFAICT.

Please, is this still reproducible?
----
Not reproducible here with Thunderbird 52.8.0_5 on KDE Plasma 5 on FreeBSD-CURRENT; the sort direction indicator does change when direction changes. Tested with the integral display of an HP EliteBook 8570p, and with a display on VGA to the right of the notebook.

Summary: sort indicator arrow not updated when changing folder → sort indicator arrow not updated when changing folder on linux
Hi, afer q quick tril on Thunderbird 57.0b2 on Ubuntu 18.04, I confirm that :
- I can reproduce bug 703849 : if mails are stored by date and I change by subject, arrow on date column also remains visible until I hover it with the mouse (without clicking)
- but I did not reproduce this bug 782907 : if I change sorting by date with older mails at top on one folder, go to another make some changes, finish by sorting most recent on top, when I go to the previous folder, arrow is well in the other position as expected, no need to hover it.

Hi, same as Xavier here on thunderbird/stretch (1:52.8.0-1~deb9u1 i386): bug 703849 is reproducible, this one seems not. At least, not on a single display cf. my comments 6 years ago and I have no external display to try right now :)
