There are addons which can give you the bookmarks toolbar button:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bookmarks-toolbar-button/
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/hide-bookmarksbar/
You can find more on the same site.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I would mostly use bookmarklets in my bookmarks toolbar menu. So I would need to accessmit quickly, and for itnto disappear after.

This toggles the toolbar on and off, which is pretty useful too. I would rather have a pop up menu that disappears after you make a selection.

this is nice for bookmarks. also same issue, not being able to access it on current web site with bookmarklets like Instapaper.

If your bookmarks toolbar is hidden, but menu bar shown, this is a duplicate of bug 631330. If you want it to be visible when the bookmarks toolbar is shown, it's bug 581238.

Those two bugs are probably actually duplicates of each other.
