User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:9.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/9.0.1 Build ID: 20111220165912 Steps to reproduce: I click on the column view button while in INBOX to view FROM and when I reopen Thunderbird, it goes back to RECIPIENT. I have repeated this process several times, but it doesn't seem to save my columns. Actual results: Each time I reopen TB, the column shows RECIPIENT rather than FROM so I can see the list of who sent my mail. The column changes aren't sticking. Expected results: Column changes should be saved. By the way, as I was preparing to send this bug, I changed my email address, but I will check both old and new emails for responses. Thank you.
Although it will be 3 days before my email address is changed, I will check both old and new email addresses. Thanks. Mag
(In reply to Margaret from comment #1) I can save column display without issues: User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:9.0) Gecko/20111222 Thunderbird/9.0.1 Application Build ID: 20111222141531 Maybe you have some addons which you need to disable then check.
(In reply to Margaret from comment #0) > Steps to reproduce: > I click on the column view button while in INBOX to view FROM > and when I reopen Thunderbird, it goes back to RECIPIENT. Do you set Inbox as draft folder and/or folder to save sent mail copy? If so, the column is perhaps changed to one for special folder of Drafts/Sent. From column of ordinal folder is changed to Recipient when Drafts/Sent automatically, to save space, and for normal column display of draft/sent mail. In this case, workaround is "show both From and Recipient column".
Summary: column changes won't stick → column changes won't stick (At Inbox, From column is always changed to Recipient column after restart of Tb)

RESOLVED!! I had not noticed that in one of the prior updates, there was a change made where when you changed the column settings, you had to continue to the bottom of the column list where it requests whether you want FOLDER or FOLDER & CHILDREN, which after you follow the prompts, it FINALLY gets you to a request to SAVE! After doing this, I believe the changes finally save. Fortunately, the SENT column still shows recipient as it should. All other folders in the tree show FROM as I wanted. I went ahead and did this with all my email addresses just to make sure. Thank you so much for all efforts to help me. Unfortunately, it was MY FAULT entirely, for not noticing the change over the last several updates. Thank you all for all the many hours of work you put into creating and servicing such an awesome browser. It is truly appreciated and I am happy to donate to help continue the work you all contribute. May your new year be healthy, happy and prosperous; and may the work you continue to do for all of us bring you more joy than angst. :-) Thanks again, and my apologies for missing the prompt at the bottom of the list. Why can this bug in which bug opener already found cause of problem(or effective workaround) be dup of a bug in which nothing is clear yet. Bug opener says "Unfortunately, it was MY FAULT entirely", so I closed as INVALID, but it was perhaps wrong. (a) "Column selection change of folder at which column selection change was done" is always saved in .msf(MsgDB) of the folder. But it can be passed to next restart of Tb only when .msf file is physically written. Until phyically written to .msf file, the selection change is held in memory. (b) "Apply column to" immeiately writes .msf files physically for folders to which column selection is applied, when OK is replied at dialog. In comment #4, bug opener did "Apply column to/Folder or Folders&its children" before restart forced by update. I believe this is the trick in comment #4. Actual problem may be next. (c) Upon restart of Tb which is forced by update, .msf file is not physically written in .msf file, or "physical write of .msf file due to forced update" doesn't care for column selection change.

Margaret(bug opener), can you show us .msf content before/after termination of Tb? (1) Before restart Tb, keep backup of Ibox.msf (msf-1) (2) Restart Tb => Recipient is shown for Ibox, From is not shown for Inbox. (3) Change columnn selection of Inbox to From column. (hide Recipent, show From). Don't execute "Apply column to". (4) Terminate Tb, keep backup of Inbox.msf (msf-2) (5) Edit msf-1 and msf-2 by text editor. Is string like next seen in msf-1? "senderCol":{"visible":false,"ordinal":"11"} "recipientCol":{"visible":true,"ordinal":"13"} Is string like next seen in msf-2? "senderCol":{"visible":true,"ordinal":"11"} "recipientCol":{"visible":false,"ordinal":"13"} Note: Check can be done by other column. Column names seen in in .msf file. threadCol, flaggedCol, attachmentCol, subjectCol, unreadButtonColHeader, senderCol, recipientCol, junkStatusCol, receivedCol, dateCol, statusCol, sizeCol, tagsCol, accountCol, priorityCol, unreadCol, totalCol, locationCol, idCol (idCol==Order Received column)
The problem, I believe, isn't truly a bug, but the fact that I have 8 email accounts currently in TB. When this happened, after the update, and I noticed the columns had changed, after I went to "apply to folder" but did NOT follow the tree all the way to the accounts and folders I wanted changed. I currently have all the columns set as I prefer, and have restarted TB several times, so any backup of the msf probably will not show the difference. On the old version of TB, all the folders contained the column "From" except the folder SENT, which showed "Recipient". Perhaps, during an update, this was changed. However, my files have been changed and I've done a clean-up before your request. (I'm terrible about checking my email and I apologize I didn't get this before I did the clean-up) You may want to check the code for multiple accounts so the folders show the colum "From" in all folders except the "Sent", which technically should be "Recipient". Thank you for all your help, and I apologize for not noticing that I had to RETURN TO THE COLUMN ICON TO GO DOWN AND APPLY FOLDER CHANGES, in order to get the "OK" apply box. Thanks, Margaret
(In reply to Margaret from comment #8) > The problem, I believe, isn't truly a bug, but the fact that I have 8 email > accounts currently in TB. When this happened, after the update, and I > noticed the columns had changed, after I went to "apply to folder" but did > NOT follow the tree all the way to the accounts and folders I wanted changed. To make it simple, focus on Inbox only, and call main account=Account1 and any other account=AccountX. Is comment #0 for next phenomenon? "column selection change at Account1/Inbox" is not reflected to AccountX/Inbox after restart. Is comment #4 for next phenomenon? "column selection change at Account1/Inbox" is reflected to AccountX/Inbox immediately and after any restart of Tb too, by "Apply column to". Is your comment #0 for which? - "column selection change" is lost after any termination of Tb/restart of Tb. - "column selection change" is lost only after forced restart by software update. I thought next. "column selection change at Account1/Inbox" is lost at Account1/Inbox after restart of Tb. It is only after "restart forced by sofware update". (some comment posters say so in other bugs for similar symptom) > You may want to check the code for multiple accounts so the folders show the colum "From" > in all folders except the "Sent", which technically should be "Recipient". "Recipient which technically should be for Sent(and Drafts)" is implemented by "internal default column set of no-From/with-Recipient" which is different from one for Inbox, and is set by "Reset column to default". This default set is applied too when .msf is manually deleted. "Automatic swap of From<->Recipient when Sent/Drafts" was already removed. Because any column(except Subject) can be shown/hidden via UI, Recipient is hidden and From is shown if column selection of other folder with "Recipient-hidden/From-shown" is applied to Sent/Drafts. Currently available workaround after "Apply column to" is: "Reset column to default" at Sent and Drafts of all accounts to which you executed "Apply column to Folder&its children". (I prefer "delete Sent.msf/Drafts.msf manualy & restart Tb" to it :-) ) Another minor issue in "Apply column to". There is no way to apply column to "Unified Folder" because hidden account of "Unified Folders"(hostname=""smart mailboxes") is hidden at account/folder list as usual. If you believe such issue should be resolved, open separate bug for them, please.
Different minor issue in "Apply column to". There is no way to apply to Virtual Folder(Saved Search Folder), because Virtual Folder is not shown in folder selection list.
Question to bug opener. (Q1) Did you saw same problem as bug 718038 in comment #0? (Q2) Did you find workaround of problem of bug 718038 by "Apply column to" in comment #4?
I read thru this bug again. - "Restart of Tb" in comment #0 is not limited to "restart of Tb by update" only. - "Column change was not kept after restart" in comment #0 sounds to include "Column change of Inbox of account-1 was not reflected to column of Inbox of account-2 after restart of Tb". Closing as INVALID again. "column change loss only after forced restart by update" is perhaps involved in your comment #0. Watch bug 710056 for it, please. By the way, another issue in "Apply column to" is found in bug 710056 comment #27. If a folder is opened at other Tb Window, "Apply column to" doesn't change column selection of the opened folder. So, "open Sent/Drafts/Templates of all accounts and Outbox of Local Folders at other Tb Windows" is a workaround of "Sent type folder's column selection is changed to column set for Inbox type folder by Apply column to" issue :-)

Should this bug related to my new reported bug here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=726983 ? thanks.

Well this one has driven me nuts until I found that: Unified inbox no longer keeps columns sticky as described above. No matter whether I try to save columns settings in unified, next time TB is opened all the columns have reappeared and sort is from oldest date to newest the reverse. TB version 31.2.0 Linux. If I uncheck Unified then all folders behave as they should.
Same/Similar problem here! Currently on TB v31.3.0 and for the last few version updates over the last couple of months, the chosen columns for Unified view are lost on every restart of TB. Really annoying to get default columns, half of which are pointless to me and I have to deactivate them, then activate my favourite other ones, then re-order them, each and every time I restart TB. TB Unified view and columns worked fine for me for ages and no matter what I try now, the choices never stick. Something got broken for columns in Unified view. Working fine in all other views but I only want to use Unified so that I can see and use all my mailboxes at once.
Adding some terms in bug summary, to avoid confusion. To all "me too" comment posters to this bug. Please note; - Phenomenon of "Your column change is somehow lost for you in your environmeny once" is not always same problem. - This bug is for problem reported to comment #0 by bug opener, so this bug was closed as INVALID. FYI. There are/were some known issues relevant to "Thread column change" and "Changed Thread column choce". 1. Column change is lost by forced restaart. This was due to Tb's bug, and is already fixed. 2. Column change is sved in ,msf file. .msf file update is done upon folder close, So, "column change of currently opened folder" is lost if "termination of Tb without updating .msf of the folder" is forced. Examples of this case are "power failure while Tb is running", "Killterm of Thunderbird", "Delete xxx.msf, and restaart Tb". This case is never BUG. 3. Column choice of IMAP folder is lost by "Repair Folder" of IMAP folder. This is known bug aand is still open. 4. Column choice at Search panel is not retained. This is known issue, and bug for it is already opened. 5. "Apply column to of Unified Folder" is not supported yet. As seen in drop down menu of "Apply column to", "Apply column to" is currently available on "folder which is shown at folder pane of View/Folder/All". Because Unified folder is implemented as "Search Folder of a hidden account", "column change via Apply column to" is not supported for Unified Folder. This is known issue, and bug for it alreaady exists, AFAIK, there are some bugs for phenomenon like "Column choice of Unified folder was not retained". Please search bugzilla.mozilla.org well via "Advanced Search" of Search at B.M.O before adding complaint to already closed bug which is for different problem from yours,

Thanks for the reply. Yes I probably failed to fully think about the initial bug and was in effect replying to the previous comment to mine which seems to be the same problem as mine from around the same date. (Win7 with a few IMAP accounts) I had searched quite a lot over four separate occasions in recent weeks to try and solve this problem and found no bugs or solutions. My problem is not related to threads or search, I don't use them. It's not related to system or TB crashes or rebuilding/repair of folders and msf. My problem is that the Unified view columns used to stay as I left them during TB close/restart and now they don't. One thing that might help is if I could change the default column specification so that it always defaults to the way I need. But I can't find information on that anywhere either. I assume not many other people are suffering from the loss of unified column choice/order on TB restart?
