Can you reproduce the issue in the firefox safemode ?
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
Possibly Bug 718939 - Java applet causes text entry fields to become semi-unresponsive, which I believe was fixed in SeaMonkey 2.7.1.
So ...
Do you use Java?
If you disable Java in SeaMonkey 2.7, does the bug persist?
If you update to 2.7.1, regardless of Java, does the problem persist?
I will see how 2.7.1 performs. You are probably right - it may be Java causing the freezing. Yes I do use Java in some applications. Should I change to another package and move from Java?

If indeed it is Java then 2.7.1 should fix the issue.
