Details

When there is only one attachment in a message, it is directly selectable without expanding the attachment bar.

Complaint 1: having the option to expand the bar is completely superfluous.

When there are two or more attachments in a message, they are collapsed and only accessible through expanding the attachment bar.

Complaint 2: as long as all attachments fit in the line that is shown anyway, thunderbird should go the same way as for one attachment and make them directly accessible (and make the bar not expandable as in complaint 1)
This is already addressed in bug 647036.
