I installed Mozilla Firefox 10.0.1 ESR in "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox ESR". I went to Help | About, Check for Updates, Apply Update.
I got "the update could not be installed", and Firefox restarted with 10.0.1esr. The patch updated had not been applied. See attached logs. I tried the fixes in bug 683490, but without success.

Rename firefox.exe fails. Firefox.exe does exist and is not read-only. My effective permissions on firefox.exe are Full control. Running as local admin.

The update log seems to be for an install without firefox.exe (perhaps it is the one where you manually renamed it). Please delete the contents of the install directory, install 10.0.1 (I believe it is the esr version), and try again. If it fails please attach the last-update.log and backup-update.log to this bug... if it succeeds just comment that it worked in this bug.

Robert, same error popup.
Steps:
1. I renamed "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox ESR" to "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox ESR foo" (in case old files are relevant).
2. I re-ran Firefox Setup 10.0.1esr.exe (file ver. 4.42.0.0, signed Wednesday, February 08, 2012 5:05:29 PM), selected Custom Install
- I picked "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox ESR" as the destination directory.
- I unchecked all three "create shortcut" boxes
- I left "Run Firefox" checked. Firefox started normally.
3. Help | About, Check, Install Update => same failure.
See attachments. Thanks for your help!

Note: the only content of update.xml is
<updates xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/2005/app-update"/>
so I'm not attaching it separately.

There is definitely something different about your system when compared to the vast majority of systems. EACCES is returned for the rename operation to firefox.exe. If you are running anti-virus software or virtualization software (e.g. Zone Alarm ForceField) can you try updating with this software disabled. Also, there is no need to attach the additional files that haven't been requested. Thanks

I have a virus scanner I can't disable (corporate). I tried the rename from bug 683490 comment 37, but that didn't work either. It did, though, download and run the full update successfully after the patch update failed. Close this one out unless you have any other ideas. Thanks again for the help!
