Hi, For contributor engagement campaigns, starting with MozCamp LATAM (April 19th), we need graphics that transport the metaphor of the SUMO superhero: 1. a superhero rescuing someone 2. a cape butler, that gives the cape to the superhero 3. a superhero in an typical English red phone booth We will be using the material for websites, presentations and print materials. The above order is the priority, so if you can get at least the first two ready before the MozCamp it would be great. Please let me know if you need any additional information or if you have any questions. Thank you! - Rosana
Thanks Rosana. This could be a pretty tight request to pull off in the next two weeks. Can you give us more background about the SUMO superhero concept and how these graphics will be used? For example, what websites? -John
Thanks for the quick reply John! The idea is to build programs around the superhero metaphor. We think it will help contributors and users understand the importance of SUMO and create positive feelings around SUMO. These are the websites we would like to have this graphics on: - the how to contribute page on SUMO - campaign websites (we are planing a "cape butler" program, a reminder for contributors that is time to help on SUMO, based on their chosen availability. We want to be like Batman's butler ;) - Presentations about SUMO from contributors The print materials would be: Posters, flyers, business cards, swag, etc. I know this is very tight, that's why one graphic for MozCamp would be great to start, we can work with more time on the rest. Let me know if you have more questions. And thanks again! - Rosana
Hi John, After doing an assessment of our webpages and decided how we want to redesign them, we came up with the images we want to create. We had the superhero theme as an initial idea and at least for our "cape butler" program we would like to keep it. But we can talk more in detail about the images on a call if you prefer. The idea is to have all images in web and print resolution, so that we can use them everywhere. I described first the type of images we need, and the the exact number of them below. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! - Rosana Images needed: We need three types of images: a) Motivating image: shows that helping in SUMO (general or specific area) is fun and "heroic" b) Impact image: visualization of the impact that a contribution can have: how helping on SUMO directly touches the life of many users c) Icons for functional areas visualization: We need to easily explain visually what our different areas are about From this images we need: - 1 motivating image for general SUMO - 4 motivating images, one for each functional area (army of awesome, forums, knowledge base, l10n) - 1 Impact image for general SUMO - 4 impact images, one for each functional area (army of awesome, forums, knowledge base, l10n) - 4 icons, one for each functional area (army of awesome, forums, knowledge base, l10n) Additionally: - Cape butler image
Hi John, Here's the information I shared with you on the call: The images will be used for this redesign: https://docs.google.com/presentation/pub?id=19l6Xfn4UrFtcQhcxMRT8oa1loFbX3SpG4POD28S6cVs&start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000#slide=id.g116b1d46_1_0 This is a quick and dirty mock-up of the pages to get an idea of where the images would be used: https://support.allizom.org/en-US/kb/get-involved To clarify: - Motivating images should visually explain what the functional area is about in a "fun, heroic" way. Users should get at least an idea of what to expect in that area (e.g.: army of awesome is about twitter, KB is about writing help articles, Support forum is about answering questions, L10n is about translating help articles). - Icons: can use the same visual metaphor of the motivating images, but refined to the most important (iconic) aspect - Impact images: should explain visually the impact that a user can have. Like you help x million users or save a twitter user's day. The emphasis here is on the numbers and the sense of making users happy with their Firefox. I hope this additional information helps. Please let me know if there are more questions. Thanks, Rosana
I haven't forgotten about this! Should have our design resources lined up soon. More to come...
Thanks! Let me know if I can help at any time.
Ok, the plan is for Sean to do the motivating images (based on our Kit character) and Lee to do the icons and impact images. Rosana, do you have a deadline we should be working towards? Or a general timeframe so we can prioritize?

Hi Rosana. Lee, Sean & I met this morning and are almost ready to get going on this...just have a couple of questions for you first: - can you give us more information about the content for the impact images? Specifically, details on what each one will be visualizing would be most helpful. - do you have the exact dimensions for both the motivating and impact images? We'll need to know the sizes before we can start. Also, on a related note, what are your plans for the overall design of the pages? I assume they'll be based on the redesigned SUMO pages that Lee & Bram worked on recently, but knowing more about that would also help. (And if you need our help creating a template for these pages, we can probably do that.) Lastly, we were thinking about a 2-week turnaround to get these finished up. How does that sound? Thanks- John
Hi John, Thanks a lot for getting this rolling! I'll try to answer all of your points, but if there's more need for clarification I can meet with Lee, Sean and you. - Content for the impact images: The basic idea is to make visually clear that contributing in SUMO (with an article, in the foums, etc) can have a big impact. So it would be something along this lines: "Translate a SUMO article and help 5 million people". - Size: I think the size will depend on the template for the pages, so if we could work together on this we can figure it out. I'm sure with your team's help we can get great pages - A 2-week touraorund sounds really great! Let me know if a meeting could speed things up, I'd be glad to organize it. Thanks, Rosana

So it would be something > along this lines: "Translate a SUMO article and help 5 million people". Can you give us those details, though? Lee, Sean and I won't really know what the impact details are. And if we can come up with specific numbers or statistics then that's even better. Our thought was to treat these like little infograhpics, but we can't do that without the info. > - Size: I think the size will depend on the template for the pages, so if we > could work together on this we can figure it out. If so, that's fine but we should do that first (as a separate bug) and then come back to these illustrations.

Our thought was to treat these like > little infograhpics, but we can't do that without the info. There's a mix of factors for the impact: on the one side cold numbers on the other side the fact that you help and people are thankful. You can see the details for each area here: KB --> one article that can be viewed by 400 million users and translated in 70+ forums --> solving 1 issue can save the day of up to 1000 users and all those people will thank you for it l10n --> local hero saves the day of millions of local users and his country will look up to him AoA --> help up to 100 people daily (proactively) that will love and thank you and stick with firefox because of you > > > - Size: I think the size will depend on the template for the pages, so if we > > could work together on this we can figure it out. I created the bug for the templates here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781175 Let me know if there are more questions or if you need more details for the impact images. Thanks, Rosana
Thanks Rosana. My recommendation is that we come back to this when bug 781175 is complete.

First mockup of icons for: - Army of Awesome - answer questions in support forum - write help articles - translate help
+1
Thanks Lee for these designs, the icons look good and transmit the message.
Icons look good to me, too. Lee, are you working on the overall page design still? Just trying to get caught up on what happens next.
And do we have the dimensions for Sean to start working on the hero images as well?
Looking at my last mockup in comment 13, there seems to be some flexibility on the size of graphics we create here - depending on how/where the graphic couples with copy. I'm a concerned however that once we get all Motivation, Impact, and Icons on the same page, it's going to look quite busy and overwhelming. Maybe the Motivation and Icon images will suffice? Rosana, what do you think?
Hi Lee, The impact graphics are really important to us, because we will use them also for presentations and print materials. Ideally the page wouldn't look too overwhelming if the impact image goes more in the direction of an inforgraphic. But let me know your thoughts on this. As for the hero images, do you mean the cape butler, John? I think that to keep consitenca they could have the same size as the motivation images on the subpages (like here the top image: https://bug781175.bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=652006) Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, Rosana
I actually meant the motivating images when I said hero images. Our main goal here is to make sure all the images fit together nicely and don't make the page feel too jumbled or overwhelming for the user. Lee, any further thoughts on comment #19?
Attaching a mockup of what the 3 different tiered images could look like on one page (hero image is FPO, as noted in mockup.) I'm still concerned that the Impact images might compete with the Icon graphics, if we're trying to communicate complex ideas with pictograms. If we can simplify the Impact images to one single data point (ie: 1 Tweet = 100 happy people), that might simplify things. On the other hand, if you're happy with the treatment of the blurb in this mockup (it's style is unique to both, hero image and icons), we can certainly proceed with this style for the other Impact images. The biggest issue here is the L10n, however) Is it possible to revisit how we want to communicate/simplify these points? I think I could use some copywriting help, if we go the way of the mockup. KB --> one article that can be viewed by 400 million users and translated in 70+ forums --> solving 1 issue can save the day of up to 1000 users and all those people will thank you for it l10n --> local hero saves the day of millions of local users and his country will look up to him AoA --> help up to 100 people daily (proactively) that will love and thank you and stick with firefox because of you
Hi Lee, thanks for the mock up, now it's easier to understand why it could look too bloated. I actually think that going more in the infographic direction is better that using that copy. I agree with you that the copy isn't good enough. When we wrote it we thought it could help you understand and create create the impact images, but I think just going with plain number will be a better choice. I think though that a contrast color is needed for the infographics, since everything is gray the impact has to be clear with colors. Specifically thing about what those numbers would be: - KB --> one article that can be viewed by 400 million users and translated in 70+ languages - forums --> solving 1 issue help up to 1000 users a day - L10n --> translating 1 article can help thousands of users in your language - AoA --> 1 tweet saves 1 day Let me know if these numbers work for you or if you have other questions. Thanks, Rosana
Hi Lee, I just wanted to know if you need maybe additional information or have further questions. I think the infographics would be great for us. Thanks, Rosana
Hi Rosana, I took another pass at these impact images. Let me know what you think of these. I have versions without the 'fun arms'too
Hey Rosana, just wanted to check back in with you regarding the impact images.
Hey Lee, These look good, let's go with them! Do you need any input for the motivation images? Thanks, Rosana
That's great Rosana, I'll size and post the assets soon. I believe the motivation images rest in Sean's capable hands :)
Hi Sean, Do you need any additional information for the graphics? Do you have a time line for creating these images? Thanks, Rosana
Rosana, here are the Impact images as PNGs sized to 620px wide. They're a little bit big, but you can scale them down if you need to. Thanks! Lee http://cl.ly/1w1D371l2o02
Thankd for the impact images Lee!
Heya Rosana, Let me take a look at some of my other projects and see if I can fit this in soon. It'd be a fun break to play around and get these finished! Potential timeline to come.

Great Sean, it would be great to get a time line for this soon! Thanks, Rosana
Hey Rosana! I'm illustrating these out and have to clarify what is needed: - 4 motivating images, one for each functional area (army of awesome, forums, knowledge base, l10n) + 1 cape butler image Based on that can we come up with whatever we want for the 4 poses or is there a list of something you had in mind for them like comment zero? Thanks!
Sean, Rosana is on PTO till next week. Unfortunately I can't answer whether she'd like to have something specific. Let's wait for her to come back.

Hi Sean, I think that the idea is to explain a bit visually what the area is about and show it as "fun and motivating". I don' have any specific ideas, but if you want I would love to connect and we could brainstorm a bit.Let me know if you want to meet and I will arrange a meeting if that can help to speed up things. Thanks, Rosana

Hi guys! Do we have a timeframe for this? We are pretty much done with the redesign and it will be great if we can start closing the final pieces (like this) before Holidays. Sean, let us know if there's anything that you need from our side. Thanks again for helping us with this. Ibai
He Sean. I know you're on PTO now but wanted to add this note while I was thinking of it...let's be sure to prioritize this when you're back in January. We need to have it wrapped up by the middle of next month to meet some related SUMO project deadlines.
Hey all. Happy 2013! Want to wrap these images up this week, so could I get a link to examples of where in the design they will each be housed as motivation images - so I can see placement and dimension? Thanks!
Flags: needinfo?(rardila)
Hi Sean, Happy 2013 to you too! You can see the location of the images in the mockups that Lee created and are attached to this bug. The layout of the pages can be found here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781175 Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

Thanks Rosana. One other question - I've been using vector to do these, but wondering what the usage scenarios would be for these? print also? I'm wondering because I was thinking of doing them sketch style in Photoshop. The drawback there would be they aren't in vector. Example: http://f.cl.ly/items/371G1j42450b0r131i2U/Untitled-1.png Just a thought, but please confirm if and how they'll be used beyond the site. Thanks!
Hi Sean, We need these images for for websites, presentations and print materials, that's why we need vector images. The sketch style looks good :) Thanks! Rosana
Hey Lee, Could you shoot me the PSD's (or whatever working files) you have for these, so that I can slice the icons out and use them? Thanks! Rehan
Here is a sample (not finished) of the classic comic style I'm going with that I think will play nicely with the sandstone style of the site: http://cl.ly/image/2a001V0Q0O2j More to come!
Hey Sean, This is really cool! I really like this style. Looking forward to more!
OMG that drawing is just awesome!
This is super cool! I can't wait to see it printed on a T-shirt.
*MEGA UPDATE ZOMG* Hey all, Here are the illustrations and my tweaked-layout suggestions for some added oomph with the "hero" motif. Sketches (freehand raster): http://cl.ly/image/0g1c2S460Z0e/o Color added (converted to vector): http://cl.ly/image/2o0F3O3H1Z0H/o Main illo: http://cl.ly/image/0V0h0A203l20 Sub illo: http://cl.ly/image/3L0i0f1z2O20 Notes: - in the current layout for these pages, the illustrations are super small and I think this tweaked layout calls out the key-theme visual in a stronger way. - all in vector so can be used for print, clothing, etc - I went with a kinda classic comic / Calvin and Hobbes kinda feel to them, hope you like it. I may mix up the color of the watercolor swaths they're sitting on per each of the 5 pages. Enjoy!
OMG! Sean, this is just so incredibly awesome!!! wow, really thanks, I love this!!! It also looks great on our pages, thanks so much for putting so much effort into it! I'm so excited to see them online and printed! Thanks again! Where can I get the vectors?? Rosana
I'll start saving out the final EPS and PSD files and will link them here once complete. Thanks!!
Amazing work, Sean! The look is kinda soft and friendly without being too childish. I love these (but then again, I'm a huge Calvin and Hobbes fan :)
Rehan, here are the graphics you requested. Apologies for the late reply! http://cl.ly/1O2B0w1f1b2X (In reply to Rehan Dalal [:rehan, :rdalal] from comment #42) > Hey Lee, > > Could you shoot me the PSD's (or whatever working files) you have for these, > so that I can slice the icons out and use them? > > Thanks! > Rehan
Hey all, I've saved out PSDs, PNGs and vector files for the artwork and it can be found here: http://people.mozilla.org/~smartell/sumo/SUMO-hero.zip I also added in my suggested layout changes for the headers. Here's hoping it's some CSS tweaking and nothing too revolutionary. Any questions or help needed with these, ping me directly on IRC for quick response. (mart3ll) Enjoy!
Awesome, thanks Sean! Rosana, are we ok to close this bug?
AMAZING JOB! This is really great and I can't wait to start seeing these pieces used as the main SUMO assets. Rosana is on holidays but based on my conversations with her, we can close it. If anything is missing, we can always reopen. Thanks again, the wait was totally worth it.

Hi!, I would like to translate the phrases of SUMO_graphics.ai into spanish. I looked for something similar to font http://www.photoshoproadmap.com/fonts/family/Komika-Axis/
Hi Willy, thanks for letting us know. I think that font is fine to use as a replacement font for the SUMO graphics.
Hi! I finished the translation Here you are, the version in spanish https://www.dropbox.com/s/ji8h1b9x34hzmqb/SUMO_graphics_es.ai
