Please revamp the IRC account creation wizard.

At the moment, the server address has to be put in two page before the port and SSL setting have to be configured.

Suggestion:

Page 1 - Server connection and settings page

Server:
Port:
Use SSL:
Password (if necessary):
Character set: [A drop down list!]

Page 2 - User name
User name shown to others:
Alternative user name shown to others: If the previous is used by someone else or a ghost after losing connection.
User name shown in own Thunderbird (local alias):

Page 3 - Customizations

I'm unsure that this bug is currently actionable, I see that you feel the account wizard isn't set up in the best way, but there seems to be a solution offered without a clearly identifiable problem.

Yes, the hope is that most users will not have to touch these settings (and we want to default to SSL in the future, but there's a bug in reconnecting to Freenode right now). There's also a technical reason behind this: the nickname and server make a unique identifier for the IM account while all the other options are from a set of protocol options.

Character set seems out of place here. (And don't get me started on character set anyway...)

This is an entirely unrelated to this bug and requests an unsupported feature right now.

I think this bug has some good ideas in it, but needs to be split up into some specific actionable chunks.
