Details

The IRC protocol allows for adding colors and bold, underline, reverse to your text messages, but it isn't possible to enter those attributes in the message field. Maybe it's possible to add a ribbon, much like the ribbon in the Compose window when you compose a message in HTML format...

P.S. I wouldn't know how rich text messages are displayed, since I haven't seen them here on irc.mozilla.org, but it would be nice to be able to select this with the normal View | Message Body As command to switch between HTML and plain text for displaying messages.

It's not a matter of IRC supporting them, the chat code in general doesn't have a richtext input field to it. That will need to be supported first, I think.

And yes, the protocol supports it. But in like 4 or 5 different (incompatible) ways. :(

They should be displayed, if they're not it's a bug. #chatzilla has a few bold statements in their topic if I recall correctly.
