This appears to be a problem with Data Execution Prevention with the Thunderbird binaries (thunderbird.exe.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738483%28WS.10%29.aspx
Application update just lays down the binaries provided and it is up to the creators of the binaries to verify that they work properly prior to distributing them with application update.

the method described in that webpage does not work for me :( i did Google it before i made this Bug. only way it'll actually UPDATE is if i close Thunderbird an then re-open it, it'll then apply the update. now i have only had this problem in TB15, TB14 an below work fine.

I'm seeing this error on x86_64 Windows 7 every time I exit Earlybird (currently 15.0.0.4552). It started happening when Earlybird finally updated yesterday after a few weeks of no updates. I did manage to get the update to run, but now I see this error every time I close the program, either through the window's close button or from the File -> Exit menu.

(thanks to Joe for remembering this)
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=2506289 suggests a workaround
according to bug reports bug 763361/bug 753461, I think you should not be seeing these in TB17 nor TB15.
