Screenshot attached. This is right after update, so the first view of a new tab. Would expect there to be only one Facebook and one Gmail, but there are dupes of both.
heh, those uris are unique, hard to tell if gmail.com and google.com/mail are the same thing (well, we do know, but how do you generalize a similar algo?)
So this is actually bug 737358 (respectively bug 559175). The missing thumbnails are probably because you didn't visit those pages with Fx 13, yet?
I went and visited each page that was missing a thumbnail. All but the secure SF credit union site (which resolves to a "page no longer available" https://secure.sanfranciscofcu.com/auth/Authorize?fiid=1) now have a thumbnail. The thumbnail for the 'Facebook' as well as the 'http://facebook.com' are the same.
Ooc, why couldn't these thumbnails have loaded in the background (we obviously have the url) without my having to visit them each once in order to get thumbnails?

We tried this first but we would never know when the user was actually ok with us loading the page in the background (think of some suspicious wifi and we load your facebook page and send cookies and the like). Also, we had a lot of background overhead, flash/video/audio playing in the background and so on...

This page sends a 404 header, so we don't capture it.
So the only part of this bug still remaining (for me) then is the duplication - will there be a focus on trying to collate matching domains into a single thumbnail? Even if just for super popular sites like Gmail and Facebook, this seems like a good UX to me. The alternative would be to allow user customization of what to load in each spot.
Mass-move to Firefox::New Tab Page. Filter on new-tab-page-component.
