Background: Certain large locales at this time will see the Firefox for Android launch promotion. However, there are certain locales where that launch is not applicable, and that we'd like to educate about search engine preferences at this time, due to the Yandex switch. Most users don't know they can change their default search preference! Let's change that. Let's specifically design this for the Russian locale to start. Graphic Direction: Simple - show users how they can change their default search engine. Focus on the Russian use case here. Screenshot: http://support.mozilla.org/ru/kb/stroka-poiska?e=es&redirectlocale=en-US&as=s&s=manage+search&r=3&redirectslug=Search+bar#w_managing-search-engines Copy Direction: Main point to get across - we're all about user choice, you can customize/switch search engines within Firefox. Here's how (graphic should show how at a glance). Include a "learn more" link that will take users to the detailed SUMO page. Susan - Let us know if you have anything else to add. Timeframe: How about by next Friday, June 29th? (live date is July 17th)

Thanks LoFo. I'm handing this to the amazing Ty. Can you share a little more about your needs though? Is this going to be targeting the Russian use case only? or will this be shown to all locales not targeted for mobile? Do you have a link to the current WN page for this/these locales so that Ty can use that as a starting point? Do you have a separate copy bug for this? if not, lets make this both design and copy for now.

(In reply to Tara (musingt) from comment #1) > Thanks LoFo. I'm handing this to the amazing Ty. Thanks! > Can you share a little more about your needs though? Gladly. Is this going to be > targeting the Russian use case only? or will this be shown to all locales > not targeted for mobile? Russia only, yes. > Do you have a link to the current WN page for this/these locales so that Ty > can use that as a starting point? Just replace the country code in the URL. For Russia it's /ru/, so http://www.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/13.0/whatsnew/ > Do you have a separate copy bug for this? if not, lets make this both > design and copy for now. Good idea.
Here's some more copy direction - let's be sure to callout the fact that Google is now the default search engine, in order to educate users about this change. Here's more info that we're using other places that you can draw from and be consistent with: "Google is now included as the default search option in Firefox for Russian users." "...as always, users can easily set their personal search preferences by selecting another search provider on the search bar drop down menu." Susan - Mark - feel free to chime in with other input on the copy direction.
I feel like we don't have to specifically call out Russian users in the headline since this will only appear in Russia. Also, based on the length of the line in the current Russian What's New page, I think it's best to keep this as short as possible. Below are some headline options and some copy. We'll also need some short explanatory steps to walk users through changing their search engine, but I'll wait to see how Ty wants to handle that and then I'll fill in the blanks. Ditto on a learn more link. [HEADLINE OPTIONS] Now search with Google by default. Use Google to search by default. Google is now your default search engine. [COPY] If you'd like to use something else, you can always change your search preferences quickly and easily (and as many times as you like). Here's how:
Headline: I'm leaning towards short and simple third: "Google is now your default search engine." Copy: No suggested changes Susan - what do you think? (Matej/Ty, Susan is a key stakeholder here so let's make sure she signs off through the creative review process) Ty - have at it on the graphics!
I prefer the 3rd one. Also, I thought What's New would include announcements on other new features as well?
(In reply to Susan Chen from comment #6) > I prefer the 3rd one. Great - let's proceed with that. Also, I thought What's New would include > announcements on other new features as well? Nope - in the Russian locale this page will focus on how to change your search providers - a lot of people don't know how customizable this is, and this change gives us the opportunity to remind people about that, while educating them about the change that just took place. We will have other promotions running at this time in a few other locales, but this is the focus in RU at this time. Ty/Tara - when can we expect to see the first round of creative? The original timeline I proposed in Comment 0 has passed, so please let me know what will work for you so we can stick to a schedule.
Matej - can we have a couple more lines about the "here's how"? I ask since we need to get this localized. I grabbed this from the /en/ SUMO page, will it work? http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/search-bar-easily-choose-your-search-engine?s=change+search&r=1&e=es&as=s "To change the active search engine, click the down arrow next to the search engine's icon, and select a new search engine." If so I'll pass these strings over to the localizers.
(In reply to Laura Forrest from comment #8) > Matej - can we have a couple more lines about the "here's how"? I ask since > we need to get this localized. I was hoping to wait with this until I saw what Ty had in mind visually. I thought a stepped approach with boxes or callouts might be good, in which case the copy would be different than just writing a sentence. Ty, what were you thinking here?
I caught up with Ty briefly last week, he said he's got this next on his agenda. Ty can you share an update when you can? we're fast approaching the deadline. LoFo, any wiggle room on that date?

Good news - change of plans for this page. No new creative will be needed - we've decided that since Mobile is available in this market, we'll use the already created Mobile promo and add in a line of text explaining the change in search engines. Ty - no new creative needed. Matej - I'll take another glance at this copy and see if it'll fit the new scope. I'll do that tomorrow am when I have more time. Just wanted to let you know! I'm keeping open until we finalize the copy (mostly on me). Happy Canada Day!

Let me know if there's anything else you need from me here. Happy Fourth of July (tomorrow)!
