Details

I have requested that my CA revokes my SSL server certificate, because there was a reason to get a new one. I already replaced the cert on my web server, but I forgot to reconfigure my mail server.

As a result, today, my mail server still used the old, now revoked certificate.

When I connected to my mail server using thunderbird,
the following happened:
  ==> Nothing

Thunderbird attempted to connect.
It showed some progress messages.
I had no clue whether the connection worked or not.
It failed to load any messages, but it didn't say why.

The reason is that (unfortunately) the default error reporting for failures on SSL connections had been ripped out of Mozilla's core a while ago.

I tried using TB 12, but it's probably the same using most recent TB.
The same problem can most likely also be experienced using SeaMonkey.

I meanwhile reconfigured my server. But I do have the revoked certificate in hand, I could configure a secondary instance of a mail server on a secondary port, if anyone wants to fix the error reporting...
Summary: No error message if mail server's SSL certificate is revoked → Mail: No error message if mail server's SSL certificate is revoked
