Details
Some of the puppet manifests I'm migrating from the old puppet to the new puppet use install_name_tool which is installed with Xcode. I talked to dividehex in IRC and he said he could look at this today. I tried to connect to this machine via screen sharing but it didn't work for me. If there is a special incantation that's needed to connect, it would be great to know for next time :-)

So in the past, I think we had explicitly NOT installed Xcode on test machines to make sure that there were no accidentally libraries not included, etc. Is this a change in direction for OS X talos machines?

I believe in previous versions of osx we were able to install 'command_line_tools' separately from xcode. It now seems to be bundled with xcode. If this is still the case and we really need the install_name_tool, we might have to use a homebrew package to get it installed.

I spent a lot of time figuring out how to have these machines exist without a full Xcode installation. See: http://hg.mozilla.org/build/puppet-manifests/file/c75bcae2bd97/os/talos_osx_rev4.pp#l136 http://hg.mozilla.org/build/puppet-manifests/file/c75bcae2bd97/os/talos_osx_rev4.pp#l145 Also: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=690601 https://bug690601.bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=566366 I know of no reason why we need the full Xcode on these machines.

Since Apple has changed the structure of their Xcode packages in the App Store, you might need to grab a DMG from their website. It might be that you need to use the command line tools package.

So form the conversation with jhford, we will not be installing Xcode on talos machines, we will be rolling a dmg for the one binary that's required.
