Steps to reproduce:

Thunderbird asks to compress the folders and emails.


Actual results:

The email content was erased


Expected results:

Can open the emails normally

According to the user here at FISL this is happening to, the hard drive is full.

This should not happen. The compress/compating operation makes a copy of the folder it is compacting and if it does not succeed (e.g. due to disk space) it should just kill the copy and leave the original folder in tact. Can you see if there are any temporary files created in the filesystem directory where your mail folders are stored? If you do not know the path, see account settings->server settings -> Local directory field.
The temporary files can have names like nsmail.tmp or something like that.

ace, is this not a potential dupe, given our current (newer) understanding of backend bugs?

I am not sure. I vaguely remember somebody like Hiro or Chiaki to patch something like this in the past.

I guess that this bug is duplicated of bug 674742 if this issue has never been happened on the latest version.
