We show categories on our homepage and the dimensions we are optimizing for are 320x480. In that width, having categories like "Books & References" is not going to look pretty. We need succinct category names.

I agree.
What's the max number of characters supported by the design?

What we doing here?
We need to all the categories accessible in some way. I think we should abandon this approach and focus it on UX where more categories can be accessed. This, IMHO, is the right solution. Doesn't mean that they are all on the home page, but are navigable to so users can explore these other categories.
Focus on this bug 807820 instead.
Can we rename these pretty please?

I think we should make these changes: https://github.com/cvan/zamboni/commit/c409648d The long category names get wrapped and they look heinous IMVHO: http://f.cl.ly/items/1w0N3n2n141X2T330a29/Screen%20Shot%202013-02-20%20at%205.39.57%20PM.png
IHVHO as well, I think it is prettier, but we have even less ways for users to explore apps now because we eliminated some categories: books and reference Entertainment and sports fitness weather and added media What happened to categories sports? How would someone know to get a FIFA app from entertainment? and still don't show several other categories (bug 807820). I feel the pain, but ultimately think we need to solve a bigger category issue: what should our categories be, how are they defined, how should they be named, how do we expose them to end users?
We can always make category names longer. And we can always add more categories later. For now they look pretty bad and are unnecessarily verbose.
I think the icons don't exactly match the category names for Health (shows are running show - more fitness), Entertainment (which has the star and medal), and News (which has the newspaper and sun). We should keep for now but adjust all this later when we figure out categories better.
The category names and UI is under re-design. I don't think they will be shorter, but will be more descriptive.
UX is looking into how to adjust our layout for longer category names
This looks great now under the redesigned category dropdown, even with super long category names (BastaCorp Telephone and Appliance is very pleased). Thanks UX/Design!
