Steps to reproduce:
My work with Mozilla Reps on Vancouver Island (BC), has reached the point where a Mozilla dist list would be very beneficial to connect parents, volunteers (mentors, community leaders), educators, government , and kids for purpose of organizing meetups, sharing Mozilla's resources in Webmaking, encouraging local leadership (parents creating webmaker clubs) . This was an outcome of a most recent event I organized: victoriapopcorn.tumblr.com/

Dear Pierros,
can you please help Emma kickstart this IT request. She is requesting is a discussion forum in the form of:
mozilla.webmaker.BC
The reason is that she is looking for a distribution list specifically tailored to the needs of Webmakers from British Columbia, Canada.
Is this possible?
Best regards,
Henrik

Hi Emma,
has there been any progress on this IT request? If no, I'd suggest you reach out to Pierros to remind him of this request.
Best regards,
Henrik

Hi Emma,
I'm sure we can figure out something :-) But we have to be careful creating new lists; a distressingly large proportion get created and then don't get used, but just hang around collecting spam and confusing people. So a few questions:
- Are there any existing lists which you might be able to use? For example, there is a mozilla.community.canada list which doesn't seem over-used at the moment.
- Is it your intention to restrict this list solely to the Webmaker program, or will it also include Reps stuff, or general Mozilla stuff? If it's more general, we might want to do mozilla.community.something rather than mozilla.webmaker.something.
- Is there really enough activity in BC such that it requires a whole list to itself? :-) If we are going Webmaker-only, the other option is mozilla.webmaker.canada.
- ".bc" looks too much like a country code (we have several groups, e.g. localization groups, named after country codes). Perhaps ".canada.bc" would be OK?

Hi Gerv,
The focus of this list is webmaking, web literacy, digital literacy in my community of Victoria. The list would include all those people I am individually emailing (and so need this list to bring everyone together) They are:
1) Programmers
2) Educational Technologists)
3) Open Data (BC)
4) Ministry of Education (BC)
5) Mozilla Employees ( x 2)
6) Mozilla Rep (me)
7) Parents of kids from our webmaker events (many)
8) Teachers
mozilla.community.canada seems too generic. I truly think we need the webmaker definition, especially for parents/teachers who might not identify with generic mozilla list (and be confused by other information posted there ie: derby in toronto)
- Yes, my intention is to use the list solely to Webmaker program
- I think there is potential for a lot of activity in BC (although we're starting in Victoria BC I wanted to include potential for province)
- webmaker.bc.canada ?
We are ahead of the curve a bit on this, and so I expect that there will be similar requests down the line for regional webmaker lists, to be potentially handled by a web-based (organic) group site? Michelle Thorne mentioned something like this (I think it was Michelle)

I also forgot on my list of people
1) Girls in Technology Group (BC)

Some other good info for the bug:
Are you expecting group discussions among all these groups? Some of the ones you listed seem better suited to a newsletter where they can email 1:1 questions rather than following the whole group, eg parents.
Or have you identified these parents as interested in being part of the group?

Comment 10•13 years ago
|
||
Yes group discussions among all these groups.
No newsletter - discussion , meetups.
Parents are interested in things like web literacy curriculum (which I am developing) and in leading their own clubs in the community.

Sorry to be a pest, but wondering how this is going?
I want to organize a meetup for just after mozfest - and would love to get everyone on the list prior to then .

I'm happy to approve mozilla.webmaker.canada.bc (getting more specific as you go along, as is normal). If you are OK with that, assign this bug to server-ops@mozilla-org.bugs. If you don't like the name, you'll need to wait until I get back from my op to discuss it more :-)

This list has been created [1] and GigaNews should add it shortly. If this isn't working by Monday afternoon, I'll contact Google directly.
Admin credentials will be sent in an email shortly.

I've sent you a backup email with the admin credentials.
Giganews has responded today, and they've added the list. Google Groups hasn't, so I've sent them a polite email requesting they do.

Hi Emma,
There was a problem with corruption in mailman which got fixed over the weekend. Could you give it another go and see if things have improved?

Thanks Gerv, I haven't had any other complaints since this one.
Any idea how long Google Groups normally takes to pick up the group though?

Emma,
We had word that Google Groups had this (and the few other not-working newsgroups) in their que for fixing, with pushes traditionally going live Monday. Seems like they were still backlogged on the 26th, so finger crossed for Dec 3rd, I suppose.

Google has not made it clear when the data import of new groups will happen, but we have confirmed we are in the batch ready to go on their system. Since I have no action available, I'm going to close this bug out for my end. We are still trying to contact google, but don't they will be making changes until the new year.
Bug 716007 is tracking the general problem.
