On the proxy properties page, it should be an option that allows the browser to
try to connect directoy to a site if the proxy isn't found.
Sometimes my machine is connected through a proxy, and sometimes it isn't. :)
qa to me.
There were some feature of communicator that did this, for PAC failures.
The problem is that some people are on proxy-only networks, so using direct
connections would not be ideal for them.
Please provide a full description (dialogs, text you would like to see, etc.)

Iván, when you say `sometimes my machine is connected through a proxy, and
sometimes it isn't', is this because you're using a different Internet
connection, or because the proxy server is unreliable?
If the former, this is a problem that should probably be solved using two
profiles with different networking settings. (Mac OS's Location Manager is
designed for just this situation. It would be cool if Mozilla supported it.)
If the latter, and if this is common, you'd need an access alert, something
like this:
+-------------------------------------------------+
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
+-------------------------------------------------+
--> Mozilla could not connect to the Internet,
<-- because the proxy server “proxy.foo.bar”
could not be found.

Do you want to try connecting to the
Internet directly?

( Cancel ) (( Connect ))

I think the option should be on the Proxy Settings tab.
A ceckbox under all other options, reading "Attempt to connect dirctly to
Internet if proxy isn't reachable", (just an example, I don't think I'm the best
for the job).
Regarding where do I connect using proxy or where do I not.
The thing is like this: both on the laptop and on the Desktop I connect
intermitently either through a dial-up connection or through a proxy. On the
laptop, it obviously depends on location. On the desktop depends on whether the
DSL machine ir running or not.
While this could be implemented with a location-chooser model, I don't see why
it should be done that way. The option above should simplify things, without any
additional dialogs, warnings, or alerts.
clarified summary.
mozilla will need a solution that works for all platforms...
Summary: option to connectig directly if proxy fails → Proxy:option to connecting directly if proxy fails
there's an intl freeze coming up, can we define what the strings will mean now
and check in definitions for the localizers? -- IMO We do not have to come up
w/ the US-En strings yet. We should be able to act like localizers and
localize based on the definition while bickering over the exact English
localization.

Such an option could be also useful for sites with a caching proxy that tends to
be down sometimes (especially on week-ends).
I'd like to add something to the suggested dialog box:
+-------------------------------------------------+
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
+-------------------------------------------------+
--> Mozilla could not connect to the Internet,
<-- because the proxy server proxy.foo.bar
could not be found.

Do you want to try connecting to the
Internet directly?

Retry the proxy every [30↕] minutes.

( Cancel ) (( Connect ))
