797814 - email not sent but put in sent folder

Steps to reproduce:

I received a warning "An error occurred sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting:  know-smtpout-1.server.virginmedia.net: Too many concurrent SMTP connections; please try again later."


Actual results:

Later on I saw the message in the sent folder and assumed it had been subsequently sent successfully.
When I was concerned about the message not being received I repeated it with a copy to myself and found it was immediately put in the sent folder despite the warning from the server.


Expected results:

Message should have stayed in drafts folder until the send was successful or it should be flagged as unsuccessful.

We have many reports like this for TB15. Is there any theory on this? Can they be linked/duped?

No it is a Pop mail server and SMTP.  I suspect virgin media have problems on its server which causes the message to be sent - possibly to do with passwords, the issue for Thunderbird is whether it can recognise it as a fatal transmission error and act accordingly so that the user is not confused on whether it was sent successfully.

Did you check if you (later) received your copy of your message in your inbox anyway?

Yes and I did not receive it. Whenever I get that message the email is not delivered.  I have a couple of accounts on that server and testing it today to send emails they sometimes get sent and go into the sent folder, sometimes time out and stay as a draft and sometimes give that message, fail to get sent but do get put in the sent folder.
