Actual results:

I can see/set reminders for my own events, but cannot set reminders for events organized by someone else

I can confirm this behavior with recent versions of Lightning and GData. The resulting entry when opened has no UI to add or manage an alert, while the entry in the Google web calendar is fully configurable in that regard. However, I haven't tested this against another type of remote calendar to see if this is a GData issue or a general Lightning one.

Also, it is possible to add a reminder for tasks, and converting the invitation to a task saved in a local calendar allows me to set an alarm. However, this workaround is less than ideal, as I then must manually keep track of the task vs the event (as we don't yet sync tasks to Google per Bug 493389).

Need to test against other remote calendars to see if the same UI is presented when opening an event organized by someone else.

This does appear to be a GData-only issue (or at least GData).

I created an iCal calendar for my Communigate Pro calendar, and sent an invitation to my Google calendar. The event opens in Lightning with the following fields visible:

Title
Start Date
End Date
Location
Organizer
Status
Reply

followed by the attendee list box and related link (which points back to my Google calendar). Note the absence (per this bug) of a reminder field.

I next created a new event in my Google calendar, sending an invitation to my Communigate Pro account. Opening that invitation in Lightning, I get the above fields followed by a Reminder field. There is also a read-only description field instead of the "related link" field in the GData-invited event, which provides a text link to my Google event (not clickable, but that's another bug (see Bug 553132 for that issue).

Seeing the same thing. I've verified that both Google and Thunderbird have a default reminder.  No joy.
