Took empty trash from file menu on mail&news. The trash folded of an account
disappeared. Now it won't delete any messages.
Please always include a build ID (or otherwise indicate when the build was made)
A similar bug 66295 was reported on Windows, but later marked WFM.

Yes, I just did it again. I did "rm -rf .mozilla" and i started mozilla
again and I let it convert my settings from Netscape 4.7. Then I clicked
on the mail icon at the lower left area, did File-Empty trash, and it
happened again. I did it twice - Same thing - Trash was no longer there.
It is really peculiar if it happens only on me. I'm, using the 0.9 for
Linux.
My system is Mandrake 7.2 and my hardware is AMD K6-2-350, Asus A5B
mother, 192 Mb mem. If it helps.

So you didn't have any database filesn(.msf) at all for your trash folder
because you removed them all? I'll try that and see if it causes the problem.

I was not able to recreate this on windows 2K. I'm not sure why this would
linux-specific. Can you recreate this by just deleting the .msf files, and not
running the profile migration?
Here's what I did:
delete the .msf files for my local directory.
restart, open the local inbox, and do a file | empty trash
The trash folder was not deleted.

Trash wasn't deleted just by deleting .msf files on Linux either.
I tried to look at the problem closer. I deleted .mozillla again and converted
from 4.7 again.
Then after 'empty trash' trash folder disappears from the folder list, but
actually it is neither deleted or emptyed. After restart trash is there again
with all the messages in it.
So is there a database of existing folders somewhere and the conversion program
doesn't do it right, mozilla mail gets confused but fixes it on exit. I don't know.

This might be related to a profile migration problem that Cavin is working on.
Cc'ing him.

changing summary and priority. I'll go add myself to the cc list of the bug
that Cavin is working on and try to get you to retest this after he fixes the
profile migration problem.
Priority: -- → P3
Summary: Empty trash deletes trash folder → Empty trash on first run after migration deletes trash folder
I'm seeing a very simular bug, that happend very differently. I have a 6.1
profile that I started using when 6.1 came out, and have regularly been using it
for my email, today when I went to delete an email, it refused to delete that
email, or any other email in that folder. And I couldn't drag drop that email to
trash or any folder within that server. (but could drop it into the trash bin in
the local folder) I tried to empty the trash bin, and the trash bin disappeared,
and then reappeared when I restarted the program, but still didn't work. So I
don't think this is nessesarly a profile migration thing, something just broke,
and I don't know what. Any suggestions in how to fix this profile? (note other
profiles work fine)

Ok very strange, after crashing it 3 times (may have been 2 wouldn't swear on
the count) it suddenly started working fine. And I can delete items and empty
trash like normal. Sorry I only have that talkback from the first crash.
BTW this all was in Window 98

unfortunately, I can't get through to talkback to look at the stack. Johnlar,
are you using IMAP or POP3?
Comment 13•24 years ago

POP, and strangly there does seem to be an option to show me the stack to a
talkback I sent, in the program. I can only delete them, is there something I'm
missing?

Emptying trash deletes the Trash folder on Linux rc3 as well as today's nightly
build. This is with rc3 installed as root and run as a user, then with the
nightly build installed as the user Mozilla is run as. After Trash is lost, mail
cannot be deleted. The mail is POPed, the boxes are local.

Are there any updates on this bug? I see the same behavior in WinXP. I saw this bug happen in v1.0, and still in v1.07. It doesn't seem to matter whether I'm doing an update or not. When I let my trash folder accumulate enough emails, I empty it, causing the folder to dissappear and preventing me from any further deletes. When I close and reopen Thunderbird, the folder reappears and I can delete mail files again.

as with bug 45777...
->WONTFIX since 4.x migation has been dropped on trunk.
If one has an overwhelming need to see this fixed on branch, please attach a patch and reopen the bug. Also, evaluate whether the issue is a bug or an enhancement request and adjust severity accordingly.
filter bugmail for "4.xmidrop" to delete these messages.
