Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0 Build ID: 20121010144125 Steps to reproduce: Attempted to dismiss Google calendar reminders using Dismiss and Dismiss All buttons. Using: Thunderbird 16.0.1 Lightning 1.8 Provider for Google Calendar 0.17 Actual results: Nothing. Closed reminder with 'X' button. Reminder keeps popping up a few minutes later. Unchecked 'Show Missed Reminders' box which seems to have alleviated the problem. Expected results: Reminder should have been dismissed after clicking on 'Dismiss' or 'Dismiss All' buttons.
Component: Untriaged → Lightning Only
Product: Thunderbird → Calendar
Version: 16 → Lightning 1.7
I can't say for sure if this is only related to Google cal events. I'm having the same issue on multiple platforms: current Ubuntu & OS/X, up-to-date Thunderbird (v17) & Lightning (v1.9). The issue does seem isolated to events that have been changed after creation. The [Dismiss] buttons on the [Reminder] dialogue does absolutely nothing. If I close the window (or press [Esc]), another pops up on the main window stating "The item has recently changed on the server. Submitting your changes will overwrite the changes on the server." [Discard my changes and reload] & [Submit my changes anyway] Regardless of what I choose (or press [Esc]), the Reminder dialogue just keep popping up, causing an endless cycle, rendering my mail client useless! I'm keeping an eye on the Error Console for more info, but nothing happens for [Dismiss] This has been a *very* long-running issue (a few years now; even pre-lightning) & would've hoped this would be addressed by now.
Additional info - Reminder popped up as well as the update dialogue mentioned above. Got some Error Console data: Timestamp: 12/11/30 9:46:19 Warning: Use of getAttributeNodeNS() is deprecated. This seems to have worsened recently. I'm now (on Gentoo Linux) with SeaMonkey-2.17 + Lightning-2.2b1 + Google calendar via CalDAV, and reminders can be neither dismissed nor snoozed -- even killing the window makes them popping up endlessly. Differently from previuos comments, I notice that, at every reminder popup, the console show the same error: ------------>8--------------- Error: Error playing alarm sound: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80040111 (NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE) [nsISound.play]" nsresult: "0x80040111 (NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE)" location: "JS frame :: resource://calendar/modules/calUtils.jsm -> file:///home/marcoep/.mozilla/seamonkey/8mk2xqaq.default/extensions/%7Be2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103%7D/calendar-js/calAlarmMonitor.js :: cAM_onAlarm :: line 117" data: no] ------------8<--------------- Although the above error is related to Bug 535955, it looks like different error conditions happening in correspondence with a reminder cause it to enter a loop... The only way to get rid of returning reminder is to remove the related calendar entry, pretty bad :-( Please, raise the Importance to "critical" as this renders Lightning mostly useless with Google/CalDAV.
Looks like a problem with Google Calendar and listed on its Known issues page > CalDAV Sync > Changes made only to reminders are not synced <http://support.google.com/calendar/known-issues/15494?hl=en&ref_topic=1669466>
I don't believe this is the issue on the Known issues page. I've been a long time user of Lightning and this just began for me. And this is happening to any reminder, not just those mentioned in the Known issue. It also appears to be happening to other people: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=769118
(In reply to asdfvcx from comment #6) > I don't believe this is the issue on the Known issues page. > > I've been a long time user of Lightning and this just began for me. And this > is happening to any reminder, not just those mentioned in the Known issue. I'm not sure how old that known issue is, but for me sometime in the last 24 hours the same is happening when only an X-MOZ property on an item is changed, which Lightning relies on to track a reminder's dismissed or snoozed status. (In reply to sphakka from comment #4) > The only way to get rid of returning reminder is to remove the related > calendar entry, pretty bad :-( Here's another workaround in the mean time: 1) When the reminder pops up, click the "Details..." link under the event title. 2) Make a change to the event's title, such as adding a space to the end 3) Change the reminder setting to "No Reminder" to dismiss it, or select "Custom" and choose a specific future time to snooze it. 4) Click "Save and Close".

I'm having this too. I only have google calendars and it started recently (yesterday or day before). Thunderbird 17.0.5, lightning 1.9.1 I've been on Thunderbird and Lightning for years, only in combination with Google Calendar.

I've managed to get something like a functional work-around going for this issue that's been around for a few *years* now. I've dropped the Google Calendar Provider as completely surpluvous - hoping it would've fixed this issue - it doesn't - and rather making use of Google's native CalDAV protocol. Find the Calendar ID from the g'cal properties & use https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/$DALID/events , but remove the reminder option, as it's completely broken IMHO. Allows for bi-directional RW-sync. I have enough Android devices able to give me those reminders that I might otherwise miss - less distracting than a dialogue I can't dismiss. This is *such* a long running issue, saying that it's all Google's fault for not being 110% RFC-compliant is a complete cop-out, as I'm able to use other CalDAV clients (such as OS/X native iCal app, iOS) absolutely *fine* with probably the biggest mail & WebDAV servers being used out there atm.
Weird. Let me tell you that I haven't had the slightest problem dismissing calendar reminders up until now. The only change I've made, is that I bought a WP8 phone. However, the reminders were not created on that phone, they were created using Lightning (which I use almost exclusively to edit the calendar; the different phones I've used simply are my 'agendas'. And I can dismiss the reminders perfectly using Android or WP8 calendars, but not from Lightning.
> And I can dismiss the reminders perfectly using Android or WP8 calendars, > but not from Lightning. This has been my own observation too - all CalDAV clients seem to work well with Google Cals, except for Mozilla/Lightning. Why this is still an issue after *all these years* baffles me. I'm trying to encourage the adoption of FLOSS stacks - with TB/Lightning as a suitable alternative to outlook - but "annoyances" like this does not make for a strong case.
Same issue. Linux 64 bit. Thunderbird 17.0.5, Lightning 1.9.1. Cannot dismiss events. Can delete the event just fine.
Thunderbird: 17.0.5 Lightning: 1.9.1 Windows Vista 32 bit (yeah, I know) Tried removing the reminder at the Google end and then synchronising from Thunderbird/Lightning when dismissing the reminder from Thunderbird/Lightning. It gets added back in. Tried removing the reminder at the TB/Lightning end. Saving has no effect. Only solution is to delete the event in TB/Lightning. It looks to me like the TB/Lightning end is not able to update the event (permissions/write failure or some such) but there are no errors in the TB console.
I've been encountering the same problem recently. Today I installed the 'Provider for Google Calendar 0.18' Thunderbird add-on, deleted and recreated the Calendars but this time defining the calendar as 'Google Calendar' and that fixed the problem. Hope that helps others...
@Andy Chapman..if you edit the event, remove (disable) the reminder and then most important you change the name of the event (just add an underscore or something) than you can save it. I'm handling it like this for now :-(
(In reply to Eddy from comment #15) Cheers - just discovered this morning that changing the event type (Home to Personal or something) it also saves successfully.
Are bug 804009 and bug 769118 dupes or blockers of each other? If so, could someone please set them appropriately? Also, there is a workaround (from http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=623218&sid=f7f5a7024a07a14970422341d51b3bba&start=135 ) The following worked for me with Google Calendars that would not dismiss: Tools > Options Calendar tab Reminders sub-tab Where is says, "When a Reminder is Due:", un-check "Show missed reminders" Hit OK Now the missed reminders that wouldn't dismiss should go away.
Cross-post from bug 769118. I would close this bug as a dupe. The issue could be a Lignrning pre-1.9.1 issue, see https://blog.mozilla.org/calendar/category/lightning/ This version fixes an issue that prevents some events from being modified and some reminders from being dismissed in CalDAV calendars with Offline Support enabled – those affected are encouraged to test this build. If you have seen an error message with “this.mItemInfoCache[aNewItem.id] is undefined”, this is you! Be sure to reset your cache, by unchecking the “Offline Support” checkbox, restarting, then checking it again. Changelog here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?resolution=FIXED&query_format=advanced&target_milestone=1.9.1&product=Calendar&list_id=6608373
This is still re-appearing randomly -- can't dismiss reminders. Turning off Offline Support fixes it instantly. Turning cache back on causes long delay while it re-caches, hard drive spins for a long time then settles. Then the problem reappears within a couple days (lately, that is -- during other periods over the past couple years it has submerged for months at a time to the point I thought it was gone). Two different calendars, and the malfunction happens for each at different times. I can't dismiss events. Turn off Offline Support, can immediately dismiss them. Possibly related to dismissing reminders from a different client first, then they get stuck, and the whole calendar gets into a bad state. I'm glad to share whatever files would be useful when this occurs, but need specific file paths because I don't know Lightning's insides forward and backward. In short, something is still going wrong with the Offline Support feature.
I get this behavior (Dismiss or Dismiss All to not work) for reminders from the Exchange EWS Provider Add-on for Lightning (Thunderbird/Seamonkey) http://www.1st-setup.nl/wordpress/?page_id=133 So it is definitely not just a Google Calendar issue (I do not have a Google Calendar provider even hooked up to my TBird/Lightning instance). I'm using Lightning 2.6.6 and EWS provider 3.2.0-Beta77
I get the same behavior. Win7x64Ultimate / Thunderbird 31.1.1R, Lightning 3.3. Meeting reminder shows up, can`t dismiss it that instance (click on "Dismiss" / "Dismiss All" buttons). Yet, after 30-60 seconds I can no longer see that dialog (didn`t closed it with "X" button or "ESC" button). Might be just an coincidence or does the reminder window only refresh once in a while, reading the "dismiss" flags etc..?!?! Regards,
Note: I am using Oracle Beehive CalDav (can`t edit previous post?!)
I had this problem. To fix: I right clicked on the calendar on the left side (not the appointment, but the calendar). Selected properties, UN-selected 'Read-only' Then everything worked again.
I too have this problem and the "fix" mentioned in comment 23 does not work for me, because the 'read-only' check wasn't set on my calendar and I still can't dismiss reminders. I never removed the check mark there, so it was never set. I'm running linux Mint 16, TBird 24.6.0, Lightning 2.6.6. Can someone confirm this 2 year old bug please.
To fix it, I did the following steps: - Deleted the calendar from Thunderbird - Used "reset url" in google mail - Imported the new url
Thx soulofspartan... that seems to have fixed it for me too. I can dismiss reminders again.
Here is my fix, I got rid of the google calendar provider all together, works flawlessly: Download Thunderbird and install Lightning Open the new calendar dialog (File → New → Calendar) Add a new remote calendar (On the Network → CalDAV) As a location enter the following, be sure to replace your email address: https://apidata.googleusercontent.com/caldav/v2/your-email-address/events
Linux Kernel 3.13.0-37-generic #64-Ubuntu, Thunderbird 31.3.0, Lightning 3.3.1 Same Error, Cannot dismiss reminder, can also not create new events in google calender. No entry in tools -> errorlog (error.log.verbose is true)
The point of the exercise is surely not to ditch (Comment 27) Google Provider, but to fix it. I can add calendar items to Google Calendar and they sync with TB Lightning. However, I cannot add/modify a calendar entry in Lightning - calendar reverts to read-only. And I still cannot dismiss reminders.... as mentioned by others. Thunderbird 31.3.0, Lightning 3.3.1 Provider for Google Calendar 1.0.3 These issues started with Provider for GCal update in October.
I had the same trouble again! this time I did the following: - removed my calendar account from thunderbird - removed the 'provider for google calendar' from add-ons > extensions - removed 'lightning' from add-ons > extensions - closed thunderbird - removed the ~/.thunderbird/*.default/calendar-data/ dir - opened thunderbird - installed 'lightning' again - installed 'provider for google calendar' again - added my calendar again using the provider At the end of my calendar setup a popup window appeared (browser in thunderbird I guess) asking me for my credentials and then to specify what I wanted to allow lighting to manage. Now I don't get undismissable reminders anymore and I can add/edit events without any trouble. Linux Mint 17, Thunderbird 31.3.0, Lightning 3.3.1, Provider for Google Calendar 1.0.3 Hope this helps.

Thank You Chris, the extention 'provider for google calender' fixed the issue in my case. I did not use it before. The issue is still there - cannot dismiss reminders and calendar reverts to read only. Even after resetting calendar to edit, I cannot modify/add events - "Modification failed" is the only error message I get. Thunderbird 31.3.0, Lightning 3.3.1 Provider for Google Calendar 1.0.3
I have the same problem: "Dismiss all" button throws an exception (effectively does nothing): Timestamp: 2015-11-24 12:18:50 Error: : <error>'<error>' when calling method: [calICalendar::modifyItem] Source File: resource://calendar/modules/calUtils.jsm -> file:///C:/Users/User/AppData/Roaming/Thunderbird/Profiles/profile.default/extensions/%7Be2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103%7D/calendar-js/calCachedCalendar.js Line: 724 Thunderbird 38.3.0, Lightning 4.0.3.1 Provider for Google Calendar is not installed (if it is necessary, then it should be packaged with Thunderbird or Lightning should warn a user when Google Calendar is added).
I can confirm this issue hapens with Thunderbird 38.4.0, Lightning 4.0.4.1 and the Provider for Google Calendar 1.0.4 plugin. Reminder window only dismiss past events. New ones that get added to the bottom can be dismissed individually.
It seems the issue can be worked around by deleting the calendar-data/cache.sqlite file.
+1, fixed or workarounded it with: - deleting all the ~/.thunderbird/<profile_name>/calendar-data (warning: contains local calendars, I just have none of them) - deleting TB cache in ~/.cache/thunderbird - switching to Google calendar provider instead of caldav. Switching between them for ages.
Ugh!!! I have all the same issues. So, the solution seems to be ... only use Google Calendars. Great, now Google gets to know more about me. Part of the reason to use Thunderbird and use local Calendars is to NOT be part of the Google Data Mine. Was this big inserted by a Google fan? This bug is so bad that I can't even read my email without the pop-up. Does this classify this as Malware? Needless to say I am extremely disappointed in Mozilla and that this is "the fix".
Thunderbird 38.6.0, Lighting 4.0.5.2 I have all the same issues. Workarounds like removing cache were not help. The solution was: 1. Install add-on "Provider for Google Calendar" 2.7 2. Remove all your Google calendars from lighting (unsubscribe). 3. Add them all using "Google Calendar" format in "Add calendar" master. Fixed.
Confirming for TB 38.7.2, Lightning 4.0.7.2 and Provider for Google Calendar 2.7
Confirming for a fresh installation of Thunderbird 45.1.0, Lightning 4.7.1 and the Provider for Google Calendar 2.7 .
Confirming for TB 46.1, Lighting 4.7.1.1 and provider 2.7 running on Windows 7 SP2 Tried all the suggestions above. Is there anyone looking at this?
This bug has just popped up for me again for the 3rd time in the last year. Currently using Provider for Google Calendar 3.1 and TB 45.3.0. Only fix seems to be to remove the calendars and start again
(In reply to adam.feakin from comment #42) > Only fix seems to be to remove the calendars and start again I too am seeing this while testing on 50.0b. Using Lightning 5.1 or 5.2 and Provider for Google Calendar 3.1.
I was able to delete the event by logging into the Google account associated with the calendar that had the event issue and deleting the event from the calendar via browser. Problem solved.
This issue has accumulated quite a few reports starting at Thunderbird 16. It contains reports about the Provider for Google Calendar before and after the rewrite, caldav and other situations. While I fully acknowledge that this is a bug that should be fixed, I think it should be split up into the respective situations. Also, a new bug would avoid developers having to read through the various "me too" comments. If you have this issue please: 1) Check bug 1314185's dependencies to see if there is an issue that matches your situation exactly (same calendar, same mechanism (caldav vs provider), etc) 2) If not, file a new bug that blocks bug 1314185, describing your situation Thank you for your understanding!

Problem has resolved for me - haven't had any issues for 12+ months. (Todd - this is a Bug reporting forum ABOUT Thunderbird. It's not the Thunderbird program. Expiring passwords are the "norm" - makes people accountable for renewing and maintaining passwords..... as they should.)
