I get "Unknown Error 80004005" fairly regularly. In my case, it seems to be related to mail. With Mail/News open and minimized, the error sometimes pops up behind whatever I'm really working on. I can clear the message, and then I can still get mail normally. I don't ever remember getting it while actually doing something -- it always happens with biff. Which means it's tough to reproduce. You just have to wait for it to happen. This is related to bug 57057, which is already suspected to be several different problems hiding behind the same message. In 0.8 it seemed that after the error, biff would stop checking and I needed to hit Get Msg to start it back up. In 0.8.1 that no longer appears necessary. I had other problems with 0.9 so it was never running long enough for the unknown box to pop up. I have tried to reproduce this with the nightlies, but with the same problem, it take a while and it's still pretty random. My platform is Win NT 4.0 SP3, mail server is POP3 running IMail for Win NT.

This error occurs for me very regularly in Mail/News (haven't noticed it in any browser pages) when switching IMAP or News folders. This has been consistent over the last month with nightlies. My current build is 2001051704 on W2ksp1 on a 600EB 256mb of memory. I have deleted the moz support folder in my profile a few times this month. The error seems to be an annoyance only, except for some of the stability issues of the last month the error appearing doesn't seem to coincide with a crash or display failure/corruption. My IMAP server is courier imap .31 on linux. One of the news servers that this occurs on is news.mozilla.org.
I also see this on W2K, build 2001060620. That window's presence also causes strange behaviour: in other Mozilla windows, when you click on a eg. link, the link highlights as if the click has registered, but nothing else happens. If you right click eg. on a link, no menu shows up. Everything gets back to normal if you switch to the error window and dismiss it.
I just checked that clicking on buttons also doesn't work, but it seems the click is registered and actual action occurs after the error window is dismissed.
Build 2001-06-09-20, Win2k sp2 Got the same message for the first time. It happened while in mail. I had been having problems with Mozilla not connecting to anything at all. I then restarted Mozilla, immediately switched to mail, and clicked get messages. Alert box popped up. Using POP3 as well.

I am also getting this error message. - I tend to be getting it from mail/news but also from the browser. I think this has something to do with the status of my dial-up connection on win 98. Basically, if I am reading a long news message, the dial up disconects from the internet. Then when I go to the next message, I get this particular error almost every time. (it also may happens if messanger does it's auto checking of mail and can't connect or if for some reason my dial-up goes down in the middle of loading a page in the browser) If I try another message or reload a page in the browser, it finally figures out what happened and tell windows to dial-up again. Hopt this helps - Does this bug come up just in this situation - or does it occur over fixed connection / dial-up that hasn't disconected? My system is celeron 333, running win98, with 56k modem
I have been able to reproduce this in mail/news by expanding a newsgroup (which forces a check for messages) and then stopping activity while the message at the bottom is still in the middle of " checking news group 3 of 11". I used Zonealarm firewall to stop all activity in the middle of the check and I will get the same number of error messages as their is groups left to check. This occured with both MSnews.microsoft and Lockergnome news. I also stopped my packet sniffer when the error message occured and the last packet was a send to the news server.
OOPs sorry forgot :( Mozila 0.9 build 2001050515 Win 98 AOL DUN 400Pent,96Meg.
the news version of this has to do with the connection timing out.
I can reproduce this error anytime. I'm running Win95 OSR2 on an athlon 1ghz, 256MB of memory and a dialup connection. To get "Unknown error 80004005" I do the following: - Dial up. - Start mailnews. - Disconnect while mailnews is the active window. The error message appears instantly. I have seen this behaviour since 0.9, I'm now running 0.9.2.
I see this in mozilla 2001080110. This error appears to be due to (at least in my case) the connection to the news server dropping due to inactivity. start mailnews, read a newsgroup (n.p.m.performance is what I used), read a message, go away for 20 minutes (or whatever), then click on the header of another message. 80004005 error, then the message loads. Suggesting target 0.9.5 - this is very annoying and confusing to end-users. Severity to normal.
Severity: minor → normal
Keywords: mozilla0.9.5
try a more recent build. my fix for #86556 should be in the 8-12 builds and later. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 86556 ***
