STR:
1. Go to http://www.facebook.com/about/messenger-for-firefox and click Turn On.
2. Log into Facebook.
3. Use the SocialAPI while browsing through a website (I used facebook.com, google.com, and gmail.com).
After a while, a friend that I had in the sidebar was marked as offline for chatting although he didn't go offline.
I also tried this with a test account that I had logged into Facebook on another browser on the same machine and the issue reproduced. It is intermittent though, so I can't reproduce it at all times.
After waiting for about 15-30 minutes, the friends went back online - again without actually doing anything.

I've also seen this but with the difference that the status availability from the sidebar is not the same with the one from the chat window.
Until now I saw the following inconsistencies between the sidebar and the chat window:
- the user is online in the sidebar but does not has the green dot in the chat window
- the user is logged from the mobile in the sidebar but has the green dot in the chat window (or the other way around)
Please see the attached screenshots.

SocialAPI was removed from Firefox 57 and is no longer available in any current release.
