From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:0.9+) Gecko/20010522 BuildID: 2001052204 My ISP is having problems with their main newsserver. It keeps asking for authentication, even though it never has before, and it won't accept my user code and password. So, I've had to use their alternate newsserver to read messages while they figger out whats wrong. With the offending newserver left configured in Mozilla, I can't post messages to the good server. When I try to post, I get requests for authentication from the bad server, as if I were trying to download articles from it. When I cancel out of the authentication dialogs, the reply does not send and I cannot save it to Drafts. I have to cancel. After cancelling, Mozilla crashes. Two talkbacks were sent after the crash, the IDs are TB30823738X and TB30809639Q I've since removed the offending newsserver and can now post to newsgroups. Unfortunately, I cannot duplicate the errors or provide NNTP protocol logs, as requested on n.p.m.mail-news by sspitzer@netscape.com. I believe I need to be subscribed to newsgroups to get the error. Since the newsserver isn't working, I cannot subscribe to newsgroups. If there were a way to make Mozilla think I'm subscribed to newsgroups on that server, I could probably duplicate the error. Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce Possible Steps to Reproduce: 1. Have your ISP hose up your newsserver 2. Set up a new newsserver, leaving the original configured 3. Try to post a message to a group on the new newsserver. Since I can't do Step 1 anymore, I can't duplicate the error.

At the very least, you've crashed, and I've got a crash, good enough for me to confirm.
I mean, "I've got a stack trace". Sorry about that.
If there is a more general (and simpler) testcase that does not involve hosing up my ISPs newsserver, maybe we could get some traction here. ;)
I suspect this bug is another manifestation of bug 54911. Mozilla sometimes contacts the wrong server when you have multiple NNTP servers configured, and you're trying to post. Could it be that these unexpected authentication requests are actually coming from a different server than the one to which you were trying to post?

I see what may be the convolution of several bugs: 1. The same underlying problem as bug 230899. 2. A crash based on... hard to tell. 3. A compose issue. Does anyone still see this problem? If no one does, this bug'll be RESO INVALID in 3 weeks...
