found this while testing bug 79236, using 2001.05.24.09 comm bits on winNT. when
i try to download the .exe file from www.beatnik.com, i always get the Save File
[file picker] --the helper app/downloading dialog won't appear, even if i've
created a mime type where "Ask me before..." is selected.

to observe:
1. go to http://www.beatnik.com, and click on the yellow Download button.
2. the "Beatnik Player Download Zone" dialog will appear; follow the steps till
you see the Get Player Now button --press that button.
3. at this point, the helper app/downloading dialog should appear. it doesn't.
instead you get the "Enter name of file to save to..." file picker dialog.
4. cancel the download and close the Beatnik dialog.
5. go to Preferences and create/edit a mime type to handle .exe files:
   extension: exe
   mime type: application/exe
   select "Ask me before..."
   handled by: save to disk
6. repeat steps 1-3. results are the same.

perhaps i'm running into bug 79539 --however, this particular scenario hadn't
happened before, so it seems like a regression.
not a problem on mac and linux --at least with this specific testcase. [there
might be other types which would cause this on those other platforms, perhaps?
do let me know which, if anyone knows --thx!]

definitely a regression since bug 79236 [involving this dialog] was found
originally on winNT.

Sarah, please see bug 68279. Executing .exe files has been deemed verboten so
all you can do is "save to disk" (so we open the file picker directly).
I think this bug is invalid as we changed the behaviour to not enable executing
exes directly from the helper app dialog. Bill - shd we resolve this as invalid?

Yes, I was giving Sarah a chance to do it herself :-).
heh! okeedokee: verifying as invalid, per bill's 2001-05-24 19:38 explanation.
