User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:17.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/17.0
Build ID: 20121128204232
Steps to reproduce:
In the message filters dialog, I have set up 2 seperate filters on an email address, one for sent mail and one for received. (see attached picture)
Actual results:
When I select "Sent Mail" from "Run selected filters on:" dropdown it gets applied to ALL the filters in the dialog, not just the currently selected one, similarly when I select "Inbox" from the dropdown, then that is applied to all the filters (see attached picture)
Expected results:
I assume I should be able to apply different filters to be run on "Inbox" and "Sent Mail"
I can't reproduce this on TB 20, Win XP.
Can you click the Filter log button, enable logging and then try your steps again and the view the log if really both filters are shown as applied?
the filterlog has nothing useful as far as I can see, just the following:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ begin filterlog ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
<head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"></head>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ end filterlog ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
perhaps it's only relevant if I actually run the filters, but I need to set these filters to run automatically on the appropriate folders, so it's no good to change the folder manually then run. it needs to be changed and stored for each filter. I will try downloading TB 20 and see if I can still reproduce
I have run on nightly build and I have the same results - I wanted to do this to handle my numerous imap accounts and merge them into one more readable mail folder, but I think that is not as easy to do as I thought, so I will have to think of another way...in the meantime I am downloading the source and seeing if I can have a go myself...I may be some time (to paraphrase a famous explorer)
The log only contains something after you run the filters (even manually). So you have not yet done what I asked for.
Maybe you can make a video of your screen where you show how you run the individual filters and how you determine that instead all the filters were run?
@aceman I haven't run the filters because I want to PERMANENTLY apply where the filters are run. I can see as I manually select different filters this is not happening. I'm beginning to think this dialog was not meant to achieve this. If you go through the steps outlined above, you just need to select a filter (e.g. FILTER_1, change the dropdown to "Sent Mail", move to another filter (e.g. FILTER_2) , change the dropdown for that to "Inbox" and go back to FILTER_1 and it will have also changed to "Inbox" - this is what I mean
I think I now understand what you mean. If you want Filter1 to always only apply to Sent Mail, that is not possible in the dialog. That is not possible in base Thunderbird. Maybe you can find an addon for that. Rkent may know some.
For now all filters apply on Inbox of that account (when run automatically) and on all folders (in the account) you choose when run manually (e.g. from the main menu).
The dialog only allows to select a filter(s), choose the folder in the dropdown and click 'Run now'. The selected filters will run on that folder this time only. After you close the dialog any selection/intended association you made is forgotten.
Would your needs be covered by bug 294632?
Whiteboard: [DUPEME]
yes I think that would incorporate what I need. although it would be really good to also apply filters across all accounts (which would easily allow me to do what I currently want in 1 filter), would it be appropriate to tack that on to 294632 ?
I just initially scanned that "bug" and see it's a feature request really and there's some hefty debate going on as to it's desirability. I may pop over there and weigh in. thanks for the pointer
Yes, let's move over there.

actually I have just trawled through that and realised that may be a subset of 34973

so I've joined the fun there
