This seems like it might be a Retina issue. Retina MBP, 10.8.2, Nightly 2013-01-18. See screenshot. This affects all four of the Facebook toolbar hangers.
On one hand, this looks like a provider problem - they specify the content for those panels. However, Facebook's panel on most platforms shows more than the word "notifications" - it has 2 additional lines "No new notifications" and "See all notifications", which aren't being shown in this screen-shot - and if they actually are in the HTML but not being seen, that would be an issue in our social code. So it seems quite possible there is something weird going on with FF itself... [Not that the above actually helps much - it's simply my justification for not marking this as a provider issue]
Is there a "Retina Support" meta bug? If so, should this block it?

Ugh - certainly looks like a HiDPI issue. I'm surprised I didn't run across this when experimenting with the Facebook sidebar during bug 803383. (Maybe something changed since then.) Was the behavior the same back in FF18, and does it persist in the very latest Nightly?
Hmm. So I tried FF18, and the Facebook hangers look fine here (Retina MBP, 10.7). And in Nightly...the Social feature just doesn't show up for me, so I can't compare. (Yes, I've got social.enabled set to true.) Is there some other magic I need?
(In reply to Jonathan Kew (:jfkthame) from comment #3) > Was the behavior the same back in FF18, and does it persist in the very > latest Nightly? It's intermittent, and I only run Nightly, so hard to comment! My hypothesis is that it's due to connecting and disconnecting displays: you can always see Firefox compensate by doubling and halving font sizes in content as the system flails around after a display change event, so perhaps the FB hidden content didn't get touched correctly. > Hmm. Are you still seeing this problem, or has ongoing hidpi work made it go away?
Haven't connected to my external display in a while (I'm in the middle of a relo). I'll give it a shot next week.
Tested with current Nightly, can't repro. I *can* repro visible DPI switching as I unplug and replug the display, and failure to resize the window correctly (perhaps it's using device pixel count?) from a lowDPI Cinema Display to a hiDPI MBP. New bugs for those, or already on file?

New bugs for those, or > already on file? It's not totally clear to me exactly what behaviors you're referring to here. If you can't find existing bugs that cover them, please do file new bugs with explicit STR, and mark them as blocking the osx-hidpi tracking bug (785330).
