In our meeting today it sounded like we were still trying to figure out where the promos were going to live on the site or if we were going to feature them at all, so I wrote one version that points to the promos and one that points to interviews with last year's winners.

Thanks. Matt, lets be sure to create a promo design for both of the copy sets that Matej provided in Comment #4 (this takes our carousel promos to 4 total, vs. 3)
Only comment I have on these is the order of the headline.

Movie marquees typically list "Now Playing" first and then the movie that is playing.

NOW PLAYING: Firefox Flicks

I might be over thinking it. I'm known to do that from time to time : )

Good call. For that matter, it could just say "Now playing" since the Flicks wordmark is at the top of the page.
I can see dropping Flicks bc we're already on the flicks site.
Still love pairing "Now Playing" with something.

Bear with me.

Promos version - Now Playing: Flicks Tips
Testimonial version - Now Playing: Directors View

...or something that pairs Now Playing with the type of videos we're promoting.
Yup, I like that idea. How about:

Hi guys, I've posted a few examples of what I am thinking for the various carousels.

For Welcome there are two examples based on the different copy. Overall I was going for something simple with contrast to get the messaging across quickly.

For Upcoming Film events, I have carried over the faint blue grid squares from the welcome, thought this could be an interesting way to carry over the grid as it is a strong element of the overall theme. Also since this was a pretty copy heavy section I've left the list of events on white for easier reading...also breaking up the blue square grid with the picture grid.

For Early Awards I think the goal was to play up the flair of Buenos Aires with a bit of vibrant colours scene in the top right corner image and the colour swatches of the grid.

Please let me know what you think of these directions.

Thanks,
Matt
Hey Everyone.

Matt, thanks for jamming on these comps. They Look really good and I love that you comp'd them into the website for added visual reference.

I shared with the team and have our collective feedback. Sorry if it took a little longer than anticipated. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to speak first thing in the AM.

Feedback for all the carousel promos (current and future)
- Can we add the blue film strip and lifestyle mosaic to tie the website to the collateral? A good example of this is the Flicks snippet on mozilla.org which shares a similar format. Also, if it helps, I think we can play around with the film strip and mosaic positioning on the page to see what works best with the copy.

Win an Early Entry Award
*Design
- Like the layout
- Image selected to represent Buenos Aires can be more iconic and unique to BA. Maybe something from Plaza de la Republica?
- The image of the city of Buenos Aires can be bigger in the space
- Possible to add BAFICI logo? (Flicks team to provide actual but attached is one as FPO)

*Copy
- I think we should shorten the festival name to BAFICI
- Can we give higher priority to the April 3 deadline to make sure people recognize it right away?

Catch Flicks in Person
*Design
- Add film strip and lifestyle mosaic

Now Playing versions 1 and 2
*Design
- Add film strip and lifestyle mosaic
- Would be great to add screen grabs from the videos here. Not designed in a mosaic but interspersed throughout the screen as if they were floating
I get what you're saying about the layouts, Arcadio. There are definitely ways they can be punched up to be more dynamic. But it sounds like there are going to be several of these promos throughout the competition so we should try to differentiate them visually as well as through copy so return visitors to the site immediately know there's some news. I'm sure Matt can incorporate the visual elements you're requesting, but we should also give him some leeway to keep the designs fresh and distinct from each other, while retaining the overall look and feel of the campaign.

As for the copy on the Early Entry Award carousel promo, I'm fine shortening the film festival name, but I think what's going to be enticing to entrants, other than the prize money, is that it's a film festival and where it's located, which "BAFICI" doesn't communicate.

That means that "Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cinema Independiente" becomes "BAFICI Film Festival in Buenos Aires." It saves some space, but not that much.

I also want to make sure we don't have competing messages going on in this promo. Is the primary message that they can win an early award? Or that they should enter by April 3? Either is fine by me, but we need to have one strong lead message to make this effective, otherwise we have a bunch of competing elements: headline, a prominent date, festival and prize information and a CTA to click.

For comparison, here's how the promo could look if we lead with the date (which I think is a valid way to go as well, I just don't want to dilute the message):

Enter by April 3

Submit your flick in time for the BAFICI film festival in Buenos Aires and you could win a $1000 Early Entry Award and be automatically qualified for the Grand Prize.

(Looking ahead, we should start thinking about how this will work for the next early deadline, since there will be two festivals associated with that. Maybe two different promos? Not something we have to solve now, just wanted to put it in everyone's head.)
Thanks for the feedback guys,

I have worked in your recommendations as best as possible, trying to find a balance between. I've just recently passed along a PDF which has some updated carousel graphics ready for further review.

Here is the link to the R2 PDF

+ Ben

Matt...thanks for the quick revisions! Really appreciate the effort. We're looking so good!

Had a deeper think about about the Now Playing carousel promos and really think that showing the video as a lightbox on the home page would be way better than taking the viewer off to another page or website entirely.

Spoke to Ben about implementing this and he's on board with a two step process
1. R2 launch: deliver one video in the light box
2. R2.5 - R3: deliver ability to scroll (in the light box) through all the videos in the Testimonial and Trailer sets

One thing we would need at the end of the video would be a link to see the other videos in the set.

Sorry about the 11th hour timing.

Here we go:

Carousel Promos
- Catch Flicks in person: approved! Rocked it.
- Enter by April 3: have to push back here (a little) and ask to integrate the film
  strip/mosaic for consistency
- Now Playing: Watch the trailers/ design approved. Please add video thumbnail of preferred trailer video
scene. (MATEJ please choose your preferred image to show in the thumbnail)
- Now Playing: Director's Cuts/ design approved. Please add video thumbnail of "Falling in Love with
  Firefox" testimonial video

Re: the submission flow, I saw an email about some copy not being current so I'll hold off commenting on those. Also so a question about using the newsletter template for the outbound emails. Please let me know resolution on this...I haven't see the newsletter template (sorry).

Please let me know if you have any questions. I can jump on a call at any time to review.

arcadio
Thanks Arcadio, I appreciate your feedback, and am happy that you're liking the look of the creative! With regards to the carousels, all changes seem easy enough to work out...I will get those back and posted as soon as possible.

As for the newsletter, I have talked with Ben about using the template for the email confirmations and adding in Matej's copy...the existing template will fit nicely since it is already Flicks branded.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi all. Just wanted to chime in quickly here!

Most notably, thank you Matt for all the great work here. I'm really liking how this has turned out.

Also, re: comment #17 (particularly the part about integrating the film strip/mosaic), that all makes sense but I would like to make the broader point that there will be times in creating the various Flicks materials that it's not feasible to use the exact same elements throughout. The good thing about this system is that we have enough different elements to make something feel Flicks-like while also including some variety.

To be clear, I'm totally on board with the need to use these elements to build a consistent look (and in fact argued that same point with regard to the scallops on the site), but also want to make sure we're aiming for consistency rather than exact duplication. Sort of a fine line between those two, but I wanted to mention it for future reference.
Are these final and good to go?

These look good, though the "Directors' cuts" one needs a different thumbnail. Does anyone have that to send to Matt?
marking this as resolved, thumbnail issue was resolved.
