We use fabric to reconfig masters and as a part of reconfig we upload a little helper which watches master's logs and tells us when reconfig is done.
Farbric's put fails to upload:
Apr 9 06:26:21 buildbot-master54 sshd[9485]: subsystem request for sftp failed, subsystem not found
I haven't tested the patch yet.

enable sftp on CentOS and Ubuntu
Looks fine to me. The path doesn't bother me.
