We noticed this while running our automated remote tests and managed to reproduce it manually. It would seem that once in a few searches we get an error message from dev.allizom.org as seen in the screenshots attached.
This happens both with the webpage and the AMO search field on Linux Ubuntu 12.04, Mac 10.6.8 and Win8 x32 with Firefox Nightly, Aurora and Release as far as I've checked.
Steps to reproduce manually:
1. Open about:config
2. Replace the values for the "extensions.getAddons.*" (all preferences that have an url as value and start with that) from "addons.mozilla.org" and "services.addons.mozilla.org" to "addons-dev.allizom.org"
3. Open Addons Manager (CTRL-SHIFT-A)
OR
Open "https://addons-dev.allizom.org/en-US/firefox/"
4. Search for "rss"
Expected results:
-A couple of results
Actual results:
-After waiting for a while we get the message "Could not find any matching addons" as seen in the screenshot. (AMO)
-"Search unavailable" error message. (Webpage)

That issue causes all of our Mozmill tests for remote content to fail since a couple of days.
Will, can we please get this fixed ASAP? We would appreciate that.

Our elasticsearch backend is having problems opening new files. Forward duping to the real issue.
