OS X new message notification alert unhides Thunderbird [Mac]

Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.8; rv:21.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/21.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20130511120803
Steps to reproduce:
I am running Thunderbird 22.0 beta on OS X 10.8.3.
I usually keep Thunderbird "hidden" from view, and use the bouncing dock notification as a cue to check for new mail.
Step 1. Hide Thunderbird in OS X.
Actual results:
With TB beta 22.0, a notification alert appears, and Thunderbird becomes unhidden. I.e. not only does the alert window appear, but all of the Thunderbird mail and compose windows also reappear. This is very distracting and annoying because it disrupts the entire screen.
Expected results:
Thunderbird should remain hidden when I hide it.

Please retest and update the bug next week when version 23 beta becomes available. Thanks.

Confirm that this still fails under TB 23 beta 1.

I can confirm this is happening under TB 24.1.0, on two Macs running OS 10.8.x, including when running TB with add-ons disabled (safe mode). On my Macs, Thunderbird will automatically unhide itself and disrupt my work whenever there is an alert. I do indeed want the small notification window for new messages and calendar alarms, but that's all -- I want the application to remain hidden until I manually unhide it. This does not happen on my PC (Windows 7), where I receive the alert window but Thunderbird remains minimized.
I'm running TB to access Google Apps accounts via IMAP.

This is also happening to me with 24.2.0. Turning off the "Show an alert" preference fixes the unhiding, but of course also prevents the notification from happening.

This also happens with TB 27 beta.
I verified that 17.0.11 ESR does not have this problem (which is not really surprising as I believe 17 does not have OSX Notifications support at all - at least I no longer see notifications from Thunderbird).
I'm running OSX 10.9.1.

Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
Currently running 24.6.0 on Mac OS X 10.9.3 - still has the bug. For every new mail that arrives, Thunderbird will unhide and block my view. Thanks to Apple it's only one Apple-H to have it gone again. This should be an option, as - to be honest - I currently use it as a feature. If I wait for an E-Mail I'll just check Thunderbird whenever it unhides.

So this is a regression, i.e. in some version prior to 22 it did not occur?

Nils, does this still reproduce for you?
No I haven't seen this issue for long time anymore.

I don't see this as significantly improving TB's capability on Mac, so removing the meta.
Does it even still occur?
